Thicker, Fuller Hair Tips

Thicker, Fuller Hair Tips

Are you in constant combat with your hair laying thin and flat?  Knowing the secrets of transformation to get that thicker, fuller look are here for you.  It starts with understanding your fine hair and what you can do give it that full-bodied look .  The three most common reasons for hair to fall flat are the density, stiffness and curvature.  Denser hair has more hairs in a given area on the head, stiffness of the hair relates to how well the hair stands away from the scalp, and curvature refers to the straightness of the hair strand itself.

Hair that is fine often suffers from being weighed down.  Fine hair can feel and appear greasy or oily when there is build-up that styling products leave behind.  Shampooing a minimum of every other day can help to remove build-up.  Your stylist can help you find the right shampoo to do the job.

Those who have fine hair have more fragile hair.  The actual diameter of the hair strand is thinner than other types of hair.  Because of this added fragility, extra care should be taken during daily styling to avoid damaging fine hair.  With fine hair being two times as likely to break as normal, medium-texture hair, careful handling is a must.

Knots are a very common problem for fine hair.  This means a regular regimen of conditioning can help with breakage problems when fine hair tangles.  Because conditioners can weigh your hair down further, when you speak to your stylist about the right shampoo to use also discuss the right conditioners that will not add weight or product build-up.

Is thinning or hair loss your problem? Often, poor nutrition, build-up that suffocates the hair follicle, or toxins that block the hair follicle from receiving nutrients can all be causes for why hair thins or falls out.  If thinning or hair loss seems to be a problem, talk with your stylist to find a solution.

Now that you know the why of your fine hair falling flat, you can work with your stylist on using just the right products to get that thicker, fuller look.

Tame the Curls – Oklahoma City Hair Style

Having long, lustrous, curly hair is practically the hardest hair to manage, but oh so gorgeous. Who doesn’t want to wear a curl every now and then? And wearing your natural curls is not only a lot of fun, but a challenge too. Out of all the hair types, curly hair is the most versatile. You can wear it straight, curly, wavy or a mix of all three, and the easiest are your natural curls. It’s as simple as getting out of the shower and leaving it to dry naturally.

Nicole Kidman
Source: Wikipedia Nicole Kidman

However, if you’re after the Denise Richards style of perfectly defined curls or Nicole Kidman’s smooth and shiny curls, you’re going to have to put a bit of effort in. But it will be worth it. For those perfectly defined curls of Denise Richards look no further than your hands. After curling your hair, rake your fingers through it, holding each section at the ends. Finish by gently shaking to set your curl pattern.

Curls can be at their most bothersome in rain or humidity so when going for Nicole Kidman’s look be sure to use products that lock out moisture. Curls can suck up damp moisture, inflate and frizz out. Girls with curly hair all say the same things – dryness, frizziness and tangling. These tips can help tame the mane.

Hairdressing tips:

Dryness Chances are if you have curly hair it is most likely dry and rough which makes it a lot more prone to frizz and needs more maintenance. So air dry hair wherever possible to avoid dryness and breakage.

  • Shampooing your hair can really dry it out and strip hair of all moisture so unless severely dirty, skip it.
  • Try rinsing your hair with luke warm water instead of hot. The hotter the water the dryer the hair will be.
  • Use a moisturizing conditioner for dry hair and leave in for 10-20 minutes after each shampoo.

Frizziness

Naturally curly locks with plenty of volume can soften your face and add body to create beautiful hair texture, however if your curls are lacking shape and are more frizz then looking the bizz, you need to start controlling the frizz as soon as you finish washing your hair.

  • You cannot over-condition frizzy hair. You need a heavy conditioner for every day use and a deep conditioner for use once a week.
  • Use a mixture of creams and serums to calm down the frizz – apply to damp hair.
  • Where possible limit your use of heat appliances. They damage the hair cuticle, making your hair more prone to frizz.
  • Try and stretch washing your hair to only twice a week so that your hair oils get the chance to naturally keep your curls under control.

Tangling

Replace your brush with a wide-toothed comb.  If your hair is damaged brushing only makes it worse – it is easier to damage curly hair with a brush whether wet or dry. Untangling hair while dry with any tool is not a good idea; separating the curls dry just causes more frizz. Instead of a brush, switch to a wide-toothed comb or go back to basics and use your fingers.

  • Try combing your hair in the shower while the conditioner is in.
  • Use a little conditioner and mix with 4 oz. of water in a spray bottle. Shake it up, then mist on hair. Massage it through before combing.

Naturally curly hair is a wonderful thing – it gives you so many options and you can be the envy of those unfortunate souls who have oh so straight locks. So embrace your curls, be bold and enjoy the variety of style and look that curly hair can offer.

10 Tips To Growing Black Hair Longer – Oklahoma

10 Tips To Growing Black Hair Longer

The common thought is that black hair grows slower than all other types of hair.  In actuality, all hair types average a 1/2 inch of growth every month.  The treatment you give your hair is the determining factor to growing and retaining your hair.  Some women may practice superstitious rituals like having a strict daily vitamin regimen or follow a lunar calendar to determine when to cut their hair.  Unfortunately there is no magic spell or hair growth tonic involved to get hair to grow.  Committing yourself to healthy hair practices and giving your locks some TLC are all that you’ll be required to do.  Below are 10 tips to help grow your beautiful black hair stronger and longer.

Details of traditional hair style from the lan...Source: pexels.com

1. Have a healthy lifestyle – Taking care of the inside will help the outside.  Your choices in what you eat and drink go a long way in effecting the health of your hair. Choosing fresh fruits and raw vegetables, drinking plenty of water and getting regular exercise will show a difference in your hair health.  Often people who are deficient in vitamins and have unhealthy diets will have drier more brittle hair.

2. Hydrate and moisturize – Black hair is naturally drier than other hair types.  Using products which replace moisture and hydrate the hair make a big difference.  Choosing shampoos and conditioners with formulas created to be used on damaged or dry hair are not always found in the “ethnic” hair sections of the store.  Look at all the available products for different hair types which can help with moisturizing.

3. Regular trims – Visit your stylist regularly to get hair trimmed.  Though this doesn’t sound productive to growing hair, it actually does help since trimming helps rid the dry, damaged and split ends which slowly work up the hair shaft and can cause more damage and slower growth in the long run.  Discuss with your stylist your goals in growing out your hair and the length you’d like to achieve.  Your stylist will know how much to trim and what type of time schedule will be best for you.  The length of time between trims will also depend

on the overall health of your hair, you may visit your stylist every 6 weeks or every 3 months, only your stylist will be able to determine the best timeframe for you.

4. Protective styling practices – As your hair length increases you may be tempted to style and wear it loose, letting it blow in the wind and show how long it’s growing.  Choosing to wear hair in a protective style helps keep the length and health of your hair.  Protective styles can keep your ends, which are the driest section of your hair, from coming into contact and rubbing against your clothes, pillows or chairs.  When you keep the ends styled up you prevent possible breakage and moisture loss.  Nighttime protective styling is just as important as daytime and using satin or silk hair covers or pillowcases is better than cotton.  Ponytails which are too tight, braids which are worn over an extended period of time can lead to breakage. Show kindness to your hairline and hair by choosing hairstyles that protect and are gentle will help reach your hair growth goals.

5. Brush less – Black hair which is brushed less thrives and flourishes over black hair which is brushed too much.  Less is more when it comes to brushing black hair.

6. Turn down the heat – Occasional use of curling irons or flat irons is okay as long as heat isn’t turned up too high on these appliances.  Finding a way to minimize practices in heat styling will go a long way in helping your hair grow.  You and your stylist can talk about different hair styles which don’t require so much heat.    Find wraps, wet sets and twist styles which are gentle.

7. Relaxing with TLC – Black hair is most often damaged from the use of chemicals, especially the use of relaxers.  There are alternatives to hair relaxers and discussing the best relaxers to use with your stylist is essential in finding which relaxers are best for your hair.  Making sure your hair health is a top priority when using these chemical processes is very important and having a stylist who is on-board with you regarding this will make all the difference.  Stick with your stylist, the less people using chemicals on your hair the better and you’ll feel confident knowing your hair is being treated the best.

8. The right tools and accessories – It is often overwhelming when looking at all of the accessories and styling tools available.  The best choices for black hair will be the tools and accessories which work with the natural texture.  The right ones won’t pull on the hair, rather they will be gentle with the hair.  Losing less hair from the tools and accessories chosen means you’ll keep more hair on your head to grow.

9. Crucial conditioning – Having healthy black hair is dependent on conditioning.  Choosing the correct shampoo and conditioner along with the right leave-in conditioner will matter greatly.  Speak to your stylist about a deep conditioner for using once per month or between salon trims which will be most beneficial in working with your daily and leave-in conditioning practices.  When black hair is well moisturized it is less likely to dry out and break meaning it can grow.

10. Keeping it natural – Many women have rediscovered their natural texture.  Those women who have started down a path of stopping chemical processes like relaxing now have less damage and breakage and more growth over time.  They’ve also learned to work and style their natural black hair after some practice and talking with their stylists.  Many black women aren’t familiar with their natural texture because their hair has been constantly relaxed since youth.  It may seem devastating that cutting off all of your relaxed hair at once in order to grow it in length is the right method, but it is the easiest way to get back to your roots and begin on a chemically natural hair regimen.

Growing black hair longer can be accomplished when TLC is given to your hair and when you work with your stylist.  Adding length and reaching your hair growth goals by using the tips above can make all the difference.

Trend Alert Pale Ash Blonde with Pastel Highlights – Oklahoma City Hairstylist

Pale ash blonde hair with pastel highlights began showing up on runways a few seasons ago, and now this trend is catching on with celebrities and on the street. Pale blonde, almost gray/silver hair is very trendy this summer. Add a pop of pastel color and you’ve got a very feminine and sexy look. You have many options with this trend. You can have the pastel colors mixed into your hair as highlights, or have them peek out from under your hair in the back. Another popular look is for a pastel wash throughout your hair giving it a pink, purple, or blue tint.

Description unavailable
Source: in.pinterest.com

This style requires extensive hair color technique experience, so be sure to go to your stylist to get this look. To achieve the right shade of blonde, your stylist will have to bleach your hair to the correct level. For women or men who have very dark hair, this may take a few tries. Depending on the health of your hair, you may have to make more than one trip to the salon. This is so your hair does not become damaged. If you bleach your hair too much in one sitting protein bonds which hold your hair together may break down, and you can end up with a head of mushy broken hair.

Once your hair is to the proper level, your stylist will apply the shade of blonde you want, and then either place highlights of pastel colors, or a tint for an all over pastel look. Like all hair color services how you take care of your hair at home is important. Use products designed for color treated hair to keep your new color vibrant and fresh. These products contain ingredients to protect the color molecules in your hair and sunscreen to protect your new color from the sun. Moisture is important for color treated hair, so ask your stylist for recommendations on products and you can keep your new pastel color looking great between salon visits.

The Secrets to Sleek and Shiny Hair – Oklahoma City Hairstylist

Sleek and shiny hair is sexy. Curly, straight, wavy, thick or thin hair can be sleek and shiny. The secrets to healthy looking and manageable hair isn’t rocket science. It is a mixture of proper hair and scalp care, a great cut, and the best quality styling and hair care products you can afford. Even if your hair is frizzy and a challenge, you can have great looking hair with a few tips and secrets from beauty professionals.

Description unavailable
Source: pexels.com

First get a great cut. Go to a stylist who is experienced and can help you find a cut that will look great on you. She needs to take into consideration your face shape, hair type and texture, hair thickness, and how much time you’re willing to spend on your hair each day. It’s a waste of money to choose a cut and style that takes more time than you can afford to spend each morning. Be honest with your stylist about your lifestyle and commitment to styling your hair. Even a wash and go style looks great if your hair is healthy and cut correctly.

The second secret is to take care of your hair. Don’t use very hot water when you wash it. This strips the moisture out of your hair and scalp. Very hot water can also make your hair color fade quickly if you get your hair colored in the salon. Only use tepid water and use a gentle motion when you shampoo your hair. Never use your fingernails when you wash your hair, only your finger tips. Your fingernails can make scratches on your scalp that can get infected and irritate your scalp. Pat your hair dry with a cotton towel, don’t rub it. This prevent tangles and roughing up the cuticle layer. Never brush wet hair, only use a large tooth comb to prevent breakage and damage. Be gentle with your hair as you blow dry it. Don’t tug or pull on your hair. Once your hair is dry, use a natural bristle brush to help spread the natural oils and smooth your hair’s cuticle.

The third secret is to use professional products. These have no sulfates to strip your hair of its natural oils and pull the color out of the hair shaft. Many of them contain natural vitamins and oils to nourish your hair. One of the best products you can use contain Argan oil. Argan oil is one a natural oil from the Argan tree found only in Morocco. The nuts from the tree are ground and pressed to extract the oil which is used in cosmetics and hair care products. Argan oil rebuilds, restores and protects your hair. It is absorbed completely and does not leave your hair feeling greasy. You can find styling products, anti-frizz products, shampoos and conditioners, and even skin care products with Argan oil as a key ingredient. It provides your hair with essential fatty acids and rebuilds your hair from within.

Ask your stylist for tips on how to have sleek and shiny hair. She is your best resource for information and education to keep your hair looking sexy and healthy.

Long Hair May Be The Hairstyle for You – Oklahoma City

Long hair has always been a sign of a “fashion attitude” for both women and men. If you are considering letting your hair grow long, it is very important that you know what to expect, otherwise too much time and effort will be invested only to realize, later, that long hair is not for you. There are plenty of things that need to be considered before you change your hair style. You should consult you hairdresser and choose what is best for you. The most important is the shape of your face, but to achieve the perfect hair style you must consider all of advantages and disadvantages. In other words, your new haircut should agree with your personality, lifestyle, career, body shape, texture of your hair, eye color and complexion of your skin. Long hair has many advantages, but, it also has disadvantages, and these are of crucial importance in making the decision.

Long hair 133 (BJ)Source: pexels.com
Two considerations are attractiveness and variety. Long hair definitely stands out as a most attractive hair style, because it forms a line of hair that attracts attention. Long hair that is shining under bright light is always a wonderful sight, isn`t it? The simplest curl can make your hair look irresistibly sexy. One of the biggest advantages of long hair is variety. Depending on the time and situation, you always have a choice of several hair styles for every occasion. Do you have an official party tonight? No problem! Just tell your hairdresser what occasion it is and you can have the best look at the party. With long hair you can have a bright bun in a classical elegant style, and you can`t do that with any other length of hair.

And you can have an elegant braid if you think that will fit you better. But if you don’t want any of this, or you just don`t have enough time, there is always a good solution- a ponytail. With long hair there is nothing to worry about! You have as many choices as you want! But do not forget, everything has disadvantages. Long hair has it, too. Probably the biggest disadvantage is that you have to take care of the long hair. This takes time. Long hair also means old hair. As it gets longer, that means it gets older and requires more care. It is important to use a good quality hair mask and other preparations for this hair type to help ensure the strength, shine and health of all the hair. Do not forget to consult your hairdresser about it! It is important to adjust the length of your hair to the work you do. Because hair that always falls over your eyes may be a big problem. Especially if you work with dangerous materials or any job that involves constant precision work with your hands.

You have to really ask yourself and be sure about having long hair, because it can easily become trouble instead of beauty. If you decide to do it, however, the payoff is simply fantastic.

No-Kill Feather Extensions – Oklahoma Hair Salon

Feather extensions are one of the hottest trends right now and what makes them so popular is not only their edgy look, but the fact you can style them just like your natural hair. You can curl and straighten feather extensions and when expertly placed, they will last for several weeks. Many celebrities are wearing feather extensions and if you’ve ever watched American Idol you know how fond of feathers Steven Tyler is, and the singer Ke$ha has brought feather extensions to the mainstream of fashion.

Don’t They Kill the Roosters For Their Feathers?Source: airfeatherextensions.blogspot.in

Yes, they do. Always, actually – you can’t harvest the full set of tail feathers any other way. While feather extensions are chic, you may not realize that some of them are from roosters which are killed to obtain their tail feathers. The birds are bred and genetically enhanced to product long colorful tail feathers, euthanized around 15 months of age, and the tail feathers are then sold for use by fly fishermen or as feather extensions. Unfortunately there is no other way to harvest a complete set of tail feathers from the birds. Since the popularity of feather extensions, 1500 roosters per day are killed on some farms to meet the demand.

Ethical Alternatives

How can you have the look of feather extensions without the cruelty? There are kill free farms that use birds which are molting. These birds are not harmed or hurt in any way. The feathers are removed while grooming the birds during their molting season. Another alternative is to use synthetic feathers. These look natural and come in many different varieties and look great in your hair. All of Anastasia’s  feather extensions are cruelty-free. She’s the only stylist we know of, locally, doing these, and they’re gorgeous. Make an appointment, and choose from a beautiful selection of ‘friendly feather extensions’ when you come in, without killing anything just for decoration. You can be beautiful and kind.

Top 3 Iconic Hairstyles of the 20th Century – Hair Salon Oklahoma City

A recent poll of UK Hairdressing Council members has shown a definite trend toward retro hairstyles. Retro styles beat out “The Rachel” from the TV show Friends and Victoria Beckham’s stylish bob. In this country we see a similar trend toward iconic hairstyles of the 20th century. Big hair is showing up on the runway and at events worn by celebrities and models. Short pixie styles have been popular for most of this decade and even the beehive has been revamped with a 21st century twist. Hairstyles, like fashion, run in cycles and right now the iconic styles of the late 20th century are being reborn for today’s woman.

Number 3 Twiggy’s Pixie

Sydney Morning Herald

Twiggy was the number one fashion model in the 1960’s. Her slim looks and boyish pixie cut changed the face of fashion for many decades and her influence is still being felt today. Today’s pixie cuts run the gamut from short and spiky to slicked back and smooth. A pixie is extremely easy to wear and looks great on almost every face shape.

Number 2 Marilyn’s Curls

http://www.smh.com.au/photogallery/lifestyle/beauty/major-hair-moments-20110505-1e9ot.html?selectedImage=5
Sidney Morning Herald

Marilyn Monroe is the epitome of sexy. She is still held up to be the standard of a woman’s beauty. What makes Marilyn so sexy is her lush figure and stunning blonde hair. Her full curls are sexy and extremely feminine. Today we see her style interpreted as long sexy curls worn loosely to frame a woman’s face or brushed out and formed into soft waves.

Number 1 Audrey Hepburn’s French Roll

http://www.smh.com.au/photogallery/lifestyle/beauty/major-hair-moments-20110505-1e9ot.html?selectedImage=0
Sydney Morning Herald

Audrey Hepburn’s French Roll is the most requested style in the UK. It is a classic look for special occasions and has been popular since she wore it in Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961. The French Roll evokes a classic and royal feeling that any woman would enjoy wearing to the prom, a wedding, a special night out or anytime she wants to feel like a queen.

As this century continues more hairstyles will come and go, but these three iconic looks will always be with us in one form or another. Ask your stylist to make them yours by tailoring the cut and style to your face shape and lifestyle. Take inspiration from these styles and find a look you can make your very own.

New Years Resolutions for 2011 for Your Hair

New Years is the traditional time to review your life and make New Years resolutions. Your beauty regime needs to be updated from time to time as your needs change and new products become available. Now is a great time to take a look at what is working in your hair care and what needs some improvement.

As you age and the seasons change you will need to switch up the products you use to meet your hair’s needs. Women going through menopause may face thinning hair and dry scalp from the reduced production of estrogen in their bodies. Young men and women may have oily scalp and need a clarifying shampoo to cleanse their hair of the styling products they use. No matter what hair care needs you may have there are some general guidelines to make sure you’re caring for your hair the best way you can.

  • Use professional hair care and styling products. Your stylist can recommend the best products for your hair type and texture. Professional products are formulated to be gentle on your hair and scalp and to protect your hair color.
  • Wash your hair every other day. Unless your scalp and hair get very oily by the end of the day, it is better for you to wash your hair every other day. This helps to prevent breakage and split ends because you won’t be washing away the natural oils that lubricate your scalp and keep your hair healthy.
  • Cut down on the use of high heat appliances. Heat from curling irons, blow dryers and flat irons dries out your hair, makes your hair color fade, and can cause damage to the hair shaft. Give your hair a break and let it air dry when you can. When you do use high heat appliances be sure to use a protective product that helps your hair stay strong and shiny.
  • Keep up on your haircuts. Ideally you should get a trim every four to six weeks depending on how fast your hair grows. Regular haircuts and trims keep split ends from forming and keeps your hair looking salon fresh.
  • Go to your stylist to get your hair colored and highlighted. Over the counter color and bleach products are very harsh and contain a developer that is much too strong for most hair. Your stylist will use the correct strength of developer and mix a hair color formula specifically for you. She will also keep track of the formula she uses so that you will get the perfect color every time.
  • Stick with your stylist. Once your find a stylist you love, stick with her. She can monitor your hair and scalp and alert you if you develop any conditions you should address. She will also be familiar with your hair and be able to give you a great cut every time.

These are some resolutions to start you out in 2011. Don’t forget that your stylist is your best resource for great hair and hair care. Take advantage of her education and experience to help you looking your best all year.

Jessica Stroup and Jessica Stam have two different looks at the Charity Ball 2010. Jessica Stroup is decked out in a tailored man’s look with her short hairslicked back and wavy, while Jessica Stam is looking very feminine in a look style that shows off her blond hair and layers. Either look is a great one for parties and is easy to achieve with a bit of product and finger waving.

Get the Right Bangs to Match Your Face Shape

Bangs have been showing up on celebrities and runways this season and bangs can add a special touch to any hairstyle. The right bangs help to accentuate your eyes and if your stylist cuts them to fit your facial shape, bangs can help to give the illusion of an oval face. Your stylist can help you to determine the shape of your face and give you a cut that will accentuate your features.

Charlize Theron has a round face and long side swept bangs.

Round faces look best with long side swept bangs. Avoid having blunt choppy bangs with a round face because they will cut your face in half and make it look even rounder. If you have a square face you can pull off blunt fringe bangs. Square faces also look best with layers by the chin line to soften the angular shape of the face. Women with heart shaped faces need attention drawn away from a wide forehead and long fringe bangs that fall below the chin help to do this. The lucky few women with oval faces are the luckiest since they can wear any type of bang and hairstyle they want.

Even if you do not have the coveted oval shaped face, you can still look your best with a cut tailored to your face shape and lifestyle by an experienced stylist.
