Winter 2013-2014 Hairstyle Trends – Edmond OK Hair Salons

This winter, the real question has to do with how to part the hair. There’s plenty of diversity in terms of the length of hair, wavy versus straight hair, and the color choices available to runway models, but in all cases, the part seems to feature in heavily. It’s important to be attentive about how your hair falls this season and though there are some punked out colors and super short styles, by and large, the look is somewhat tousled and natural.

If you have short hair, there are plenty of things you can do with it this season. Pull it back from the face, or leave it wind-swept with dramatic bangs over the eyes. But make sure that you have the right cut for the season. The pixie cut is still in as well as the bob and there are plenty of other short hair styles that have made the grade as well, but steer clear of perms if you have ultra-short hair or even medium length-hair. Kinky curls aren’t really in this season.

Medium length and longer hair styles are still all the rage, particularly if you hair has just a slight wave to it and works well in styles with plenty of tendrils hanging loose. Ideally, these tendrils will be straight or nearly straight. A little bit of wave is okay as long as it look natural and unintentional. If you have particularly curly hair or dramatic waves, you may want to consider getting out the straightening tool or visiting a stylist to get your hair permanently straightened to stay on top of this season’s trends.

You can part your hair on center or over to the side, but make sure that you either use plenty of gel to tame all those fly-away strands, or leave them intentionally loose so that they can create some drama around your face. This fall we saw the heavy contrast between super-pristine hair with plenty of gel to keep it in place versus the natural look of loose hair that appears to have been out in a heavy breeze all day. This winter, this style continues to make an impression on the runway which is perfect for winter hat season when hair tends to look a little disheveled anyway.

Though parted hair is definitely what’s “in” this season, you can still comb the hair back so that it doesn’t have a part, if you must, but this is considerably less popular for winter 2013-2014. However, if this style suits your face more, it’s still entirely acceptable. Visit your hair stylist to get a cut that will support a side or center part if you want to stay current with the trends.

Messy Hairstyles for Men – Oklahoma City Men’s Haircuts

For men, the messy look can be extremely sexy, but it’s important to have the right cut to get you hair to look the way you really want it to. Messy can also look unkempt and correspondingly unattractive depending on the circumstances. If you’re looking for a hair cut that will give you plenty of versatility and allow you to wear your hair in a number of different styles included the “tousled” or “messed-up” look, continue reading. You’ll need to start first with the right hair cut in order to create a look that’s attractive and sexy.

Messed up hair looks natural and rugged on men which is part of its appeal. There are several different hair cuts that can support a messed up look and most of these cuts can also be arranged to look very clean cut as well.

Although the traditional “flop” isn’t really in right now, a floppy hair cut can provide you with a lot of flexibility in terms of style. Essentially, this cut is longer on top and shorter at the sides, but it isn’t as long as the flops that men wore in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Instead the hair is just long enough to create some texture and a tousled, wind-blown look.

Short messy hair

This season, you can wear your curls in a slightly longer style with a little bit of gel or mousse to give it a “wet” look. If you have curls, it would be best to create a look that’s soft enough for you to run your fingers through and not completely destroy the look. Your hair should never look hard to the touch if you’re trying to give it a disheveled appearance.

The bedhead look is another messed-up style for men that gives the impression that you’ve just rolled out of bed and you still look great. A proper haircut for this style would include a lot of layers and texture so that you can show off any of the waves you’ve got to your hair. After you’ve gotten the right cut, you’ll need to use the right styling products to complete the look.

And finally, one of the most popular men’s hair styles to hit the runway this season is a cut that keeps hair longer on the top and shorter in back and on the sides of the head. This trendy style is extremely versatile. It can be combed back to give a very clean and pristine appearance or it can be styled to give a messy, unkempt appearance. If that’s not enough, you can comb it forward so that the long hair creates bangs or even to the side so to create a more classic look.

Variations of the Crew Cut – OKC Men’s Hair Salon

Men’s hair styles don’t change as dramatically as women’s from season to season, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a diversity of different cuts for men to choose from. Take the crew cut, for example. This is a style that’s been “in” for decades, but it isn’t just one discreet do. The crew cut has taken many forms over the years and it has a history all its own. If you’re considering a crew cut, you should know that this style isn’t as straightforward as it seems and when you go to your stylist to tell him (or her) that this is what you want, there is actually a wide range of different looks you could end up with.

Modified Crew Cut
Modified Crew Cut (Photo credit: quirkymichael)

Technically speaking, a crew cut is a short hair style for men in which the hair at the front, top of the head, is longer and slowly getting shorter moving toward the back of the crown. The hair on the side of the head might be short or medium-length and is usually tapered. The different lengths and tapering available in this cut is what gives it so much diversitThe different lengths and tapering available in this cut is what gives it so much diversity.

Some people refer to the short crew cut as a “butch”, but this isn’t necessarily correct. A butch is a cut in which the hair on the top of the hair is all of the same length (in contrast to the graduated hair length from front to back in a crew cut). Longer crew cuts are sometimes called the “Ivy League Crew Cut” or even just the “Ivy League” for short. The longest hairs on an Ivy League cut are 1 ½ inches in length, getting shorter at the back and sides of the head.

Another variation of the crew cut is called a “Flattop”. In this hair cut, the hair is cut from the front to a chosen point on the back of the head in a sloping downward incline. This hair style looks slightly different from the more traditional Ivy League Crew Cut.

All of the different types of crew cuts or buzz cuts can be maintained with something called “butch wax”. Butch wax is a hair control wax that can be used to shape the overall look of the crew cut into a distinctive style. The length of the longest hair on the head should be determined in part by the shape of the man’s face and what would be most attractive as well as the amount of maintenance a man is willing to do on his hair each day. Though butch wax is extremely easy to use, men who don’t wish to spend a lot of time on their hair should opt for the shorter do.

Lobbying for Long Hair Lobs – OKC Hair Salons

Long hair always rules, but it can be challenging to find new hair cuts for long hair. Finding a unique way to get your hair cut when it’s long can be a real challenge, which is why some women are getting the lob, otherwise known as the “long bob”. The lob is considered to be a bold statement in some respects, but this hair cut is really quite versatile. You can wear plenty of different styles with a lob cut and still enjoy a unique look when your hair is down.

The lob is a hair cut created for women with just about any face shape. It’s usually cut just above the shoulders, which helps to keep the look from drawing the face down. The lob has an age-defying effect on women of any age and yet the cut is undeniably trendy and elegant. Celebrities such as Heidi Klum and Jessica Alba have brought the lob to the public and demonstrated just how versatile this hair style can be.

What makes the long bob so popular is that there are so many different types of lob cuts. It can be personalized to each individual and cut at different lengths to complement different face shapes or to bring out the best qualities in different hair textures. The lob can even be layered and spiced up with some bangs, hair color or highlights. In any case, you should still be able to style your hair in just about any way you like. The lob is extremely flexible. You can wear it in an elegant updo or create curls for a more sensuous look. If so inclined, you might even wear the lob as a punk look.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a new mother, a sophisticated business woman, or a bride-to-be; the lob is flexible enough for just about any woman and this fall, the long bob is definitely coming back “in”. Talk with your stylist about hair color possibilities to bring out the best in this particular hair cut. If you’re looking for a slightly unique way to cut your longer hair so that you’ll have plenty of styling options no matter what your mood, the long bob is a good choice.

The long bob isn’t so long that the hair is too heavy to style, but it isn’t so short that your options will be limited either. Whether you choose to go with layers or not, you can do so much with this hair cut, you may never want to get a new style. Discuss the various options that you have available to put together a truly unique look that’s yours and yours alone using the lob as a basic template to get your creative juices flowing.

Wild 2013 Hair Color Trends

For those of us who live on the wild side, so-called “normal” hair colors just won’t do. In 2013, that’s okay because a lot of the hair colors that are becoming popular aren’t typical at all. Women who want to try something radically different can get away with it this year without wandering too far away from the trends. So take courage and get ready to try something new and perhaps even a bit unnatural in hair color.

Pastel hues are among some of the more off-beat options in hair dye for women who aren’t afraid of trying anything once. These fashion hair colors can be applied to an entire head of hair used as high-lights. Very light blondes with longer hair can dip the ends in pastel shades of pink or blue to end up with an effect reminiscent of hard candy. All-over pastels shades of pink, blue, green, or purple hair color for shorter hair styles will likely be popular this summer. Experts believe that purple will probably be the most popular color by fall.

Even stranger than pastel shades is silver and gray hair. That’s right! Young women are sporting hair that’s been dyed various metallic shades of gray! If you strive to stay ahead of the pack in terms of fashion, this trend may be the one to grab onto. Matte gray as well as shimmering hues of silver are edgy options for women who aren’t afraid to try something innovative. On young women with lighter skin tones, a silvery hue with pastel pink highlights can be quite attractive. Older women, of course, can make use of the new silvery colors to update their look as well to enhance the gray color that they already have.

Although many of the red hair colors on the market today can be quite normal, 2013 shades of red are less so. Cherry red hair colors have been around for a little while already and the popularity of this shade of dye is expected to continue along with pastels and silver gray shades. There are a number of different hues of red that have made an appearance over the past few months and all of them are head-turners. Firetruck red, copper-toned red colors, and fashion reds are all popular, representing a return to the vintage trends of the 1930’s and 1960’s.

Rather than doing something typical, women this season are encouraged to try out some of these fashion colors and enjoy the vibrance of the season. Though it takes some courage to walk on the wild side, the latest hair colors, though a bit strange, offer excellent results for a smooth and sleek finish. So take a chance and see what some of the 2013 hair colors have to offer!

At Home Hair Color Tragedies – Oklahoma City Hair Color

Though it may seem like a no-brainer to just go buy some hair color at the grocery store for a few bucks and go home and take care of a hair color emergency with your own two hands, you may be setting yourself up for a tragedy if you choose this route. Coloring hair at home (or in a salon) isn’t as straightforward as it seems. Every year, hundreds of thousands of women botch their hair color and seek help from the salon. Before you head out to the grocery store to buy a box of cheap hair color for yourself, consider all the tragic consequences that could befall you.

Hair coloring

If you’ve recently dyed your hair, you may want to consider going to a salon for a change rather than taking on the task yourself. Once you’ve dyed your hair, it can become damaged and a second attempt at dying your hair can cause breakage. Breakage may not sound too scary unless you think about breakage up near the roots of your hair. Though you can dye hair that has already been dyed, it’s wise to seek the advice of someone who is skilled with hair to get the right outcome. Otherwise, you could end up with thinning hair rather than a new hair color and lots of little ends sticking up out of your head.

Even highlights can be disastrous at home. Indeed, bleaching one’s hair is a harrowing undertaking without a skilled professional on your side. Applying bleach to the hair can be remarkably damaging and if you screw it up, it can also be hard to undo without doing even more damage. It can be difficult to walk away from an at home highlighting job without a few “stripes” (areas where the bleach wasn’t applied right) and these take expert hands to fix. And why risk it? If there’s any possibility that you’re going to end up at a salon to fix an at-home highlighting job, then just go to the salon in the first place.

If you have dark hair and you’re trying to lighten it, it’s best to visit the salon. True, there are boxes of bleach available almost everywhere, but it’s more likely that you’ll end up with the wrong color than the right one. Once you’ve totally fried your hair with an at-home bleaching solution and you’ve got orange locks, your hair color options are somewhat diminished. Instead of loving you’re look, you’ll be spending the next few months grateful to have hair at all and biding your time as your hair grows out.

At-home hair dye and bleach is usually a bad idea, but occasionally women get lucky with it. As a general rule, visit a salon if you’re wanting to take a big risk with your hair color or if you plan to bleach your hair.

Global Impact of Hair Extensions – OKC Hair Extensions

You may not ever think about it at the salon and you may not talk about it either, but the fact is, the hair used in extensions to create amazing effects came from somewhere. Clients in the United States may arrive at a salon with the hope of looking more like Beyonce or Rihanna. The origins of the hair used to create the desired look are hardly considered in most cases, but some clients want to know: where did that hair come from?

Sometimes the hair used to create hair extensions may come all the way across the globe. Indian women are known for their beautiful hair. They work very dutifully on their dreads. After the hair has been braided and then cut, it is sent straightaway to a port city and auctioned to a Chinese exporting business. Then, the hair must be washed and then packaged before it can be loaded up and shipped overseas to the United States.

The hair extensions that are available in salons throughout the United States are becoming more and more popular with each passing day. The market for these extensions has been increasing annually at the rate of about 40 percent. Over the past two years, United States salons that are offering hair extensions has increased by almost 30 percent. One of the biggest and most successful hair vendors in the country, Great Lengths Hair Extensions, has seen an incredible growth of 70 percent over the course of about five years. Women who haven’t considered hair extensions are quickly becoming the minority.

One of the reasons why hair extensions are so much more popular today than they were a few years ago is because there are new technologies that have made human hair less expensive. A new technique known as “strand application” has increased the longevity of locks and made them look better than they did before. By fusing tiny bits of keratin (which is a protein that naturally occurs in normal, living hair) to the extensions, strand-by-strand, it’s possible to make extensions look as natural as real, living hair and stay put for up to six months at a time. In the past, hair extensions would dry out quickly and have to be discarded, but today, women can don another woman’s locks for almost half a year.

As the market for hair extensions continues to expand, the technologies surrounding it will as well. Some extensions are woven into place, while others are glued, but perhaps in the near future, there will be new options that become standard. Now that the lifespan of human hair has been extended, it’s hard to say just how the technology surrounding these enigmatic hair tools will grow.

Hair Extensions – What You Need to Know – Oklahoma City

“What are the best hair extensions?” or “How are hair extensions put in?” These are questions you should have, especially if you’ve never used extensions before. Choosing the right hair extensions is confusing, as there are so many different types; they have different insert methods and come at different costs. The reason for this variation is due to the nature of hair, hair styling and color. Just as people have different hair, styles and color, so are there different extension styles, hair colors, thickness, and length, and each of these elements influences the type of extension you need.

What Kind of Look Do You Want?

Kamisuki (Combing the hair), A colour woodbloc...

Before buying your new extensions you need to think of the hair style you want and how hair extensions will help you achieve that look. Do you want longer hair? Are you satisfied with your short tresses and just want to add volume?
– Think of the hair extension color – Do you want the color to be different? If you want hair that matches your own, then you need extensions that are closely colored to your own hair color.
– Texture – Inexpensive hair extensions are synthetic and often have that plastic feel and look to them. So you want to buy extensions that are similarly textured to your own original hair. However, this may mean a higher hair extension price.

Choose the Best Hair Extensions You Can Afford

The best hair extension material is Remy human hair (real hair that is untreated by chemicals) and the much cheaper alternative is synthetic hair. There are many variations, lengths and types of extensions that fall between these two types. Just remember, human hair is more versatile whereas synthetic hair cannot be heat-styled and doesn’t last as long.

The Attachment Method

There are several different attachment methods used for hair extensions. The type you use depends on what you want and how long you need the hair to last.

– Clip-on attachment – To attach hair using this method you simply clip the extension into your hair. This method works for temporary attachments or those you put in during the day and take out at night.

– Heat-Shrink or Sew-in Extensions – if you want it for a more permanent duration, get heat-shrink tubing or sew-in hair. Although these have a longer duration the sew in attachments can be a little uncomfortable to attach, and the heat-shrink attachments can cause hair damage when removed incorrectly. These are more expensive than clip-on attachment methods, but they do last the longest, usually about four months.

– Locking extensions, or microbead extensions are more expensive, because they are done with individual strands, so they are more labor intensive, but that also means they are more natural looking and can blend better with existing hair.

The Application Process

Everything else seems a cinch compared to getting good hair extensions put in. Finding the right professional to attach the hair is critical to making the hair extensions look attractive and natural. So, before getting new hair extensions, look everywhere for a great hair-dresser who has experience with hair extensions.

Hair Extension Care

Once you’ve had them put in, the care you give your hair is important, and will keep the hair extensions looking healthy, shine and natural for as long as possible. Make sure you use a good shampoo and conditioner, recommended by the stylist, that hydrates your full head of hair, including your added hair extensions. If you decide to use removable extensions, be sure to keep them tangle-free, even when you aren’t wearing them.

Common Hair Problems and What to Do About Them – Oklahoma City Salons

Almost everyone wants to have healthy, beautiful and easy to manage hair, but split ends, dry hair, oily hair and hair loss if often difficult to overcome for many people. If you have problems with your hair and have tried product after product with little to no improvements, it could be you are using the wrong product. Many store bought hair shampoos and conditioners contain harsh chemicals that only temporarily improve the look and feel of your hair. Home remedies have been effective for centuries for adding moisture to dry hair, eliminating the oil from oily hair and stopping the itch and dryness associated with dandruff. Homemade hair care treatments are excellent for your hair, do not contain harsh chemicals, smell great and can save you money. Here are some of the most popular homemade treatments to help restore shine and healthiness to your hair.

Dry Hair

Traci Dries Her Hair

The daily use of blow dryers, curling irons and oil stripping shampoos can leave your hair dry, brittle and full of split ends. Make a conditioning mask made with two eggs, 6 tablespoons of coconut oil and 1 teaspoon of honey. Pile hair on top of your head and cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap and leave the mask on for about 20-30 minutes, rinse and shampoo with a light shampoo (baby shampoo works great). For a deep conditioner, add one teaspoon of lavender oil to ¼ cup of coconut oil, heat in the microwave for about 30 seconds and apply to your scalp and hair. Leave it on overnight and shampoo the next morning. The overnight mask should be done twice each week to maintain the softness and shininess of your hair. Your stylist can recommend the appropriate deep conditioning treatment (ask questions about whether it’s more than just heavy conditioner) to help you resist your scalp drying out, and your hair with it. Hair can be restored, often enough, with proper professional attention.

Oily Hair

If you have oily hair, it is typically due to an excess of oil being secreted in the scalp. Most people with oily hair find it becomes “sticky” a day or two after shampooing and will wash it more than necessary. Oily hair should not be washed more than three times a week, because it will only increase the amount of oil being secreted. It is best to use a natural, mild shampoo and massage your scalp while washing to loosen the oil that is built up on the hair shafts. A great homemade remedy to reduce the oil, prevent drying and have soft, shiny hair is to mix one teaspoon of aloe Vera gel and two tablespoons of lemon juice in a half full bottle of baby shampoo. Use the shampoo solution each time you wash your hair and follow with an oil free conditioner. To help reduce the oils in your hair, twice each week apply a mask of pureed carrots to your hair, leave on for about 15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water. Your stylist can recommend an appropriate regimen and help style your hair to reduce oil buildup.

Dandruff and Itchy Scalp

Having dandruff and a dry, itchy scalp can be embarrassing and frustrating. Some of the dandruff control shampoos work fine at reducing the dandruff, but they never seem to last longer than one shampoo. There are several homemade remedies that will help eliminate dandruff, without drying out your scalp. Make a soothing mask made with ¼ cup of oatmeal, 1/8 cup of water, 6 drops of lavender oil, 3 drops of rosemary oil and 4 drops of tea tree oil. Mix the ingredients together, apply to your scalp and let sit for about 20 minutes, shampoo and condition as normal. Use the mask at least once each week to eliminate an itchy scalp and dandruff. Mixing unrefined virgin coconut oil with a few teaspoons of tea tree oil and rosemary is also a refreshing way to alleviate itching and dryness on your scalp. Your stylist will have products you can’t get just anywhere to help with this, and can implement regular scalp treatments to reduce the flaking.

There are several remedies that can help you maintain a beautiful head of hair, but not all ingredients will work for everyone, so play around with different herbs and essential oils until you find the combination that is the best suited for you particular type of hair. As always, consult your stylist.

Considering Box Color? Don’t Do It and Here’s Why – Oklahoma Hairstylist

When you’re cruising the aisle of your favorite store it may be tempting to pick up a box of hair color and try to give yourself a new look. The price of box color makes it really tempting to try and color your hair yourself, but do you know the risks you’re taking? Most people don’t realize how much damage box color can do to their hair. Not only that, but you will probably not get the color on the box, and you may end up with a real mess.

Allure
Allure

Instead of taking the chance with box color, go to a qualified color professional. A professional knows exactly how to mix hair color to give you the results you want, and protect the integrity of your hair. Here are some reasons to put down the box color and call your stylist instead.

Porosity and Undertones

Your hair has what is known as porosity. This is the ability of your hair to absorb water and chemicals. If you have virgin hair (hair that has never been colored) your hair will be less porous. But if you have colored your hair or used chemicals on it, it will be much more porous. And your hair doesn’t have a uniform porosity. The ends will be much more porous than near your scalp.

A professional stylist will adjust the application and formula so that you get even color. Think about it this way, you wouldn’t expect a pair of pants to be one-size-fits-all, and this is what box color is like. It is formulated to work on all hair types, but there is no way of knowing how it will work on your hair.

Like porosity all hair has underlying tones. Some people have more red in their hair, while others may have more gold. A professional stylist will recognize the underlying tones and adjust the hair color formula so that the color comes out right. Your stylist will also be able to adjust the color formula to accent your natural skin tone. With box color you have no options. Your hair may turn out much redder than expected, or have unwanted drab gold tones with box color.

Semi, Demi, Permanent, Temporary?

Do you know what all of these hair color terms mean? Sure the box may say it will wash out in about 10 washes, but how do you know? Once again it all depends on the condition of your hair to start with. If your hair is untouched and extremely healthy, yes it may wash out in that amount of time. But in most cases it either stays in your hair and turns brassy, or it starts to fade out in spots.

With professional color, your stylist will use the exact formula and type of hair color you need. If you’re not wanting to lighten your hair, then semi or demi color is used. If you want to lighten your hair, and you have never used color, then permanent will work. But if you want to lighten your hair and have used any type of color in the past, you may need to have your hair lightened first. This takes bleach, and bleach should never be used at home.

Box color may seem like a cheap alternative to a professional color service. While you may be able to get away with box color once or twice, in the long run your hair will suffer the consequences. This includes dry and brittle hair, unwanted color, and uneven application. The price of a professional color service not only includes the hair color, but also the many years of experience and training your stylist has had to give you the results you want. Talk to your stylist about hair color, and get her opinions on it. Once you know the facts, you will see professional color is a much better investment.

Dreadlocks And Good Routine Maintenance – Oklahoma City Dreadlocks

People with dreadlocks often have issues with maintenance and keeping their dreads looking good.  If your dreads are new you want them to get smooth and tight as fast as possible.  Below are some tips that can help and are just a good routine for maintenance.

If dreads were just done they won’t need a wash for a week.  They may possibly hurt a little bit because they’re newly waxed and very tight.  Sleeping with nylon (pantyhose) can help with frizz problems.  If there is some itching as the end of the week nears, it is okay and natural.  If the itching becomes unbearable there are products that are oil based which can help relieve scalp itch.

  2. Now that it’s time to wash your dreads there are some things you will want to do.  You can use rubber bands at the top and tip of each dread.  This helps with easy maintenance in the beginning while you get used to washing your dreads.  You’ll want to wash them through nylon. Don’t use the one you sleep in.  Sleeping in wet nylon can cause major problems.  Soaking them while in the shower with the nylon on helps get them fairly wet.  Once they are good and soaked rub in your preferred dread shampoo through your nylon cover.  Massage into the dreads, paying attention to the roots, then rinse.  Rinse very well making sure all of the soap is rinsed out.  Be sure to dry them well.  The recommended way is to flip them over and let them hang down the front so you can squeeze the water from them.  The tighter your dreads, the more water they hold and longer it takes to dry.  Mildew is the main reason for dreads to become stinky and mildew is caused from improper drying.  Once you are tired of squeezing the water out, use a towel to wrap them and draw any extra water out for 15-30 minutes.  Then they should be able to air dry.
  3. Since your dreads are now clean and dry you can take advantage and palm roll your dreads or any loose hairs.  It is common for them to get a little frizzy while you work with them but they will knot and tighten fairly easily.  Once you’ve worked and rolled all your dreads you can apply a thin, light coat of wax.  Working the wax in well and smoothing any frizzes.  A hair dryer can help heat and soften the wax, but be careful with the hair dryer, it can cause more frizz problems, especially at your roots.
  4. After about 6 or 7 wash and treatment cycles like above it is recommended to do a nice hot water soak prior to the next wash.  This helps melt the old wax and remove it from the dreads.  After just a couple months your dreads should be tight and smooth and look great.  At this point you won’t need to use the rubber bands any longer but you should continue to wax them at least every couple of weeks.

With the routine maintenance guide above your new dreads should be looking just they way you want.  Your salon stylist can help you understand which products will work best for your dreadlocks care and needs.

Why do we see more and more teenagers with their hair dyed? What do you do if your teen is looking to dye their hair?  In the past, hair color fell under these categories; brunettes, blondes or redheads.  Teens today express themselves with vibrant hair colors like pinks, greens, blues and purples.  It seems there is no limit to choices for teens to dye their hair, like being able to choose from a crayon box.  This growing and popular trend with teens is becoming very popular and a way for artistic expression.

Many parents and adults feel uneasy about teens with brightly multi-colored hair.  Though some parents are confident with their teens choice to color their hair and don’t worry about their teens harmless self expression.  If teens want to have artistic and creative expression from hair dye it seems to have little consequence overall.  Teens feel expressions from tattoos or piercings are much too drastic and permanent and their hair dye is reversible, making it an acceptable form of expression.  It is simple for them to change their hair color and take the opportunity to do so now rather than when they are adults and cannot be so freely vibrant with their hair color.

There may be cause for concern if teens want to drastically change their hair dye repeatedly.  If teens are constantly changing their hair color it may be due to a problem with their self identity or needing attention.  As a parent you will need to talk with them and have open and honest communication to determine their reasoning for wanting to dye their hair and change it often.  It is possible your teen just wants to express themselves because it reflects their creativity and desire to keep their hair changes new and exciting, not for attention or because they are lacking self-confidence.

After speaking with your teen and you decide it’s okay for them to have their hair colored, go to the stylist together.  The stylist at the salon can help give your teen just what they are looking for and you’ll be included in your teens decision.

The harmless and creative self expression of teens through their vibrant and colorful hair dyes adds some brightness to our world.  Teens are often excited about their new look and enjoy being different.  Don’t be too concerned if your teen comes home one day with some color added to their hair, just remember it isn’t permanent.
