Big Hair Equals Big Style – Oklahoma City Hair Salon

Big hair is still in style this season and will be for some time. One of the great things about big hair is it plays well with curly and wavy hair that is thick. But if you have thin or short hair, you can still have big hair with human hair extensions placed professionally by your stylist. At the 2011 VMA Awards Adele wore her hair styled in a very pretty and feminine style. If you like this style, you can get it in a few easy steps.

After you shampoo your hair with a volumizing system, apply root booster, and blow dry it. Use a large barrel brush and pull your hair up away from your scalp drawing the blow dryer and brush along the hair shaft. It is easier to handle if you section your hair out first. Another easy way to get mega-volume is to blow dry your hair upside down. Simply bend over and flip your hair over your head, and concentrate the blow dryer’s airstream on your roots.

Once your hair is dry, use large hot rollers all over to give you curl and more volume. Let your hair cool completely and take the rollers out. Next with a natural bristly paddle brush, gently brush your hair out. Create a part from one ear to the other and backcomb the back section of your hair. The more you backcomb, the more volume you will achieve. Once you have the back of your hair backcombed, gently smooth the top layer of hair. Next make a deep side part and with hairspray pull the sides out and define the curls with a curling iron. If you need to, you can backcomb the front and sides a bit, too. Spray the entire style with hairspray and you’ll have a beautiful head of full and gorgeous hair.

Save Time with a Chemical Free Blow Out – Oklahoma City Hairstylist

Blow Out Bars are the hottest rage in large cities, but you don’t have to travel to New York or LA to experience the luxury and time saving service of a blow out. Back in the day our grandmothers visited the salon once a week for a wash and set. They looked upon this time as a chance to get away from it all and be pampered. It also freed them up from the hassle and worry of doing their own hair. Today you may not want a wash and set, but have you ever thought of pampering yourself and getting a blow out service? Blow out services use no harsh chemicals, just a blow dryer and a flat iron.

When you come in the salon for a blow out your stylist will give you a shampoo, blow dry your hair, and then use the flat iron to smooth your hair. What you leave the salon with is beautiful hair and a relaxed attitude. This is a great service for women who have very curly or frizzy hair. Your stylist can use professional styling (no chemicals) products to take make your hair sleek and smooth. These products will protect your hair from sun, wind, and pollution. Once your hair is blown out and flat ironed it will last for up to a week if you don’t get it wet.

The secret to the blow out is the way your stylist blow dries your hair. After towel drying your hair she will section it out and clip the sections up out of the way. Taking small sections of hair she will use a large barrel brush and direct the blow dryer’s flow onto the hair shaft running the brush and blow dryer down the hair shaft to create a smooth texture. After she gets all of the sections dry, she will resection your hair and proceed to use a flat iron combined with a heat protecting and anit-frizz product to create a sleek and smooth look.

You can keep your hair looking salon fresh by wearing a silk headscarf to bed, or wrapping your hair. To wrap your hair simply take your hair and wrap it tightly around your head. Then using a silk headscarf, wrap this around your hair and secure it with hair pins. A silk pillow case will also help to extend the life of your blow out. Blow outs work on all hair textures including ethnic hair. Treat yourself today and discover what our grandmothers knew. A visit to the salon for a “hairdo” can not only make you look great, but feel great too.

Hairstyles in the News March 26, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Hairstyles in the News! This week we have blue hair, long hair, short hair, backcombed hair, and one of the most popular looks for this season and beyond. You may think blue hair is just for little old ladies, but it is showing up in many variations on celebrities and models. Spring is a great time to try out something different. You may want to add a few hot colors to peek out from the back of your hair, or if you’re really brave go all over with a hot color. No matter what you’re in the mood for your stylist can help you to decide on the right color, cut, and style.

We never know what color Katie Perry will be wearing. In this pic she has bright blue hair and a fairly tame hairstyle. At a recent awards show in Germany she wore her hair in an Elvis inspired quiff for the red carpet, and then attached crimped bright blue extensions to form a ponytail for her stage show. The effect was stunning. It takes some courage to wear this color, but if you don’t want to try that consider dipped dyed hair. This is color only on the ends and is a toned down version of all over neon color.

Selena Gomez has a more demure blue style in this pic. Peek-a-boo highlights are a way to wear bright colors. A few peek-a-boo highlights in the back of your hair will be acceptable at most jobs and schools. You can keep your natural color and use extensions if you don’t want to color your natural hair. This is a really cute look for young women or a special night out.

Backcombing is the best way to add volume and lift to a hairstyle. It takes this very basic ponytail to the next level of chic. Backcombing isn’t really hard. Just section out your hair and then take a very fine tooth comb and comb the hair close to your roots back toward your scalp. The volume and lift will depend on how much you backcomb. Smooth the top hair over the backcombed area and then you can style it.

A new trend for this season is very structured short hairstyles. This style is very easy to care for. It is combed forward and is perfect for straight hair. You can also use a flat iron is you need to, just be sure to use heat protecting products first so your hair remains healthy and shiny. This look and others like it were seen on runways this spring.

Jennifer Lawrence, of The Hunger Games, is shown in this pic with one of the most popular hairstyles of this decade. The half updo is perfect for everyday wear, weddings, proms, and other special occasions. It is a very versatile hairstyle that looks good on just about everyone. Jennifer is wearing her hair in a loosely pulled back style and long bangs. This is a very lovely look, and you can some waves or curls for another version.

Christie Brinkley is proof women over 50 don’t have to get their hair chopped off when they reach a certain age. She is one of the many celebrities over 50 who wear their hair long. Her deep side part, volume, waves and curls keep her look youthful. To get this look use some root lift, hot rollers, and hairspray. You may want to backcomb the roots for extra volume.

That’s it for this week. Remember to ask your stylist for recommendations is you’ve found a look you want to try. Have a great week and take care of yourselves.

The Many Variations of the Bang – Oklahoma Hair Salon

Bangs frame your face and help bring out your features. There are many variations of the humble bang, but not all bangs are suitable for all face shapes. You want to find a bang that not only flatters your features, but helps to compliment your facial shape. For example if you have a round face, a heavy fringe may not be the best choice. A side swept bang will help lengthen your face and give it a slimmer appearance. Wispy bangs are also a good choice for round faces. But a heavy fringe will help hide a large forehead if your hairline is high.

Exposay.com

The current trend of a deep side part is flattering to just about everyone and it also gives way to many more bang styles. You can wear your bangs short and just above your brow line, just past your brows, or have them longer and swept back behind your ear. For an edgy look, have your stylist razor cut or point cut your bangs. This gives them a choppy look and is a great alternative to the more traditional look of scissor cutting.

You can see in this picture how the heavy fringe really brings out Christina Ricci’s eyes. Her bangs are cut almost one length all the way across the front hairline. For this look use your flat iron to smooth your bangs and curve them under just a bit. Edith Bowman’s side swept fringe gives her a youthful and feminine look. Side swept fringe is the perfect compliment to a half updo. You can get this look with a flat iron or a curling iron depending on how much body you want your bangs to have.

Ask your stylist about adding bangs to your look. She can help you find the right style and shape to bring out your features and match your style.

Retro Waves Seen at the BAFTAs

At the recent British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) several celebrities wore their hair in retro 40’s waves. Retro styles have been very popular for quite a while, and they are a great way to show off the texture of your hair. You can add retro waves to almost any hairstyle that is at least shoulder length. If your hair is shorter, try finger waves. These were very popular in the 20’s and 30’s. They take a bit of practice, but you can have your stylist help you learn how to do them if you want to try them at home.

http://uk.omg.yahoo.com/gossip/the-juice/baftas-2012-celebrity-hair-trend-40s-waves-051725435.html
The Juice

To get Fearne Cotton’s wavy layered bob, apply mousse before you dry your hair. Don’t use a brush or comb, but fluff your hair with your fingers as it drys. Set your dry hair on medium width hot rollers and let it set until completely cool. Always let your hair cool before you brush or style it to maintain the curls. Next remove the rollers and soften the curls with a wide paddle brush. To get volume, backcomb near the roots and smooth the hair with the brush, being careful not to flatten it. Use hairspray to define and hold your waves and you’ve got a fabulous style.

You can also ask your stylist to teach you the art of backcombing. It basically involves pulling small sections of hair up and using a fine tooth comb to comb the hair back toward the scalp. (Backcombing was the secret to the huge bouffant hairstyles of the 50’s and 60’s.) Backcombing helps your hair hold curls and waves, and will make your style last longer. As long as you’re gentle it will not hurt your hair. When you want to restyle your hair, let the water run through your hair when you shampoo it a bit to help loosen the curls. Use a moisturizing conditioner to keep your hair shiny and healthy looking. Retro waves are sexy and a great look for any special occasion.

Hairstyles in the News January 31, 2012

Welcome to this week’s Hairstyles in the News! At the recent SAG awards celebrities were dressed in their finest and had their hair styled to perfection on the red carpet. Several celebrities wore various styles of braids and headbands showing the current trends are still going strong. We also have an odd choice for hair color, and a very creative style carved into the head of a popular football star. Here’s what is up for this week.

Jessica Lange was looking fabulous in a shoulder length wavy style. This is a great style for women over 40 because it softens their features and is very feminine. Many women who reach 40 feel they have to cut all of their hair off, but this isn’t true. As you can see, longer hair works on any age as long as it is styled to accent her face shape and bring out her best features.

Ashlee Simpson was looking very elegant and polished with her new short style. To get this look ask your stylist for a short bob and style it with a flat iron curling the ends under. Brush it out, apply some anti-frizz serum and a bit of hairspray for a smooth look.

Diana Argon’s fishtail is a fresh take on braids. Fishtail braids are fairly easy to do. Instead of pulling the hair over to create a braid, pull it under and take hair from your head as you go. Diana’s style is a bit messy, but you can wear it this way or smooth.

Busy Phillips was wearing a very popular take on braids to the SAG Awards. She wore her hair loose with a braid to the side in the front. The side part keeps the style from looking like a Swedish milkmaid and helps to create asymmetry.

Kelly Osbourne has always been on the forefront of fashion and recently she chose to have her hair colored gray. In a recent interview she said she had this done to give her hair a rest from all of the bleaching she has done to it. Younger celebrities are trying out gray for a change. The key is to have silver gray and not gold tones to keep your hair looking fresh.

Tiquan Underwood, wide receiver for the New England Patriots, recently had his hair styled in a very creative way. His barber cut the Patriot’s logo into the back of his hair. Tiquan’s hair had already caused a stir with it’s Kid-n-Play play height, and now he’s added an even more interesting element to an already great style.

That’s it for this week. Ask your stylist to help you create interesting braids if you’re not sure how to do it. If your hair is looking a bit drab, ask her about refreshing your color or choosing a brand new color. Are you brave enough for gray? Until next week be safe and be check back next week for the next edition.

Men Go Retro with the “Darmody” – Oklahoma City Hairstylist

The popularity of HBO’s show, Boardwalk Empire, has helped to fuel a new hair trend among young men. The Darmody, or undercut, is a style which is close cut on the sides and left long on the top. Michael Pitt played the character James “Jimmy” Darmody on the popular show. His character has been killed off, but his hairstyle lives on.

http://www.latimes.com/features/image/la-ig-boardwalk-haircut-20120122,0,2376612.story
LA Times

You can also see versions of this cut in the movie, Oh Brother Where Art Thou? If you look at pictures of the old time mobsters, you’ll see this was a popular cut during prohibition times, and today it is one of the most popular cuts requested by men in their 20s and 30s.

If you want to try out this style, ask you stylist to give you an undercut. Depending on your facial shape and how daring you are, you can have your hair cut very close on the sides or have a more blended look. The key is to have the sides shorter than the top. You can then use pomade and slick the top back, or for a different look use styling paste to add some texture.

http://www.latimes.com/features/image/la-ig-boardwalk-side-20120122,0,1552250.story
LA Times

This cut is suitable for almost all jobs and walks of life. Not quite as funky as the mullet, but not as boring as a fade, the Darmody is an excellent choice for young professionals and any man who wants to look polished and tap into the retro trend. This may not be the style for you if your hairline is receding since you won’t be able to get the signature combed back look, but your stylist can adapt the cut to your hair and give you a reasonable facsimile. Get in on the retro trend and give the Darmody a try.

Headbands have been seen on runways and red carpets and are one of the newest trends of 2012. Headbands were one of the styles making headlines at the recent Golden Globe Awards. On the other end of the spectrum is a hippy chic floral headband. The trick to this style is to wear a scarf or wide headband to frame your face. This is a great way to add some color and pop to any outfit. You can check out thrift and second hand stores for vintage headbands and scarves to tap into this popular retro look. (Ask your mom or grandmother to look in their dresser drawers for vintage finds.)

Braided headbands are another hot trend this year. You can purchase them as is or get creative and make your own out of hair extensions. If you want a natural look choose hair extensions the same color as your natural hair, or choose fantasy colors for a more daring look.

Bring on the Bangs – Hairstylist Oklahoma City

Bangs are a quick way to switch up the look of your style. Bangs can open up your eyes and make you look younger if styled properly. Side bangs make almost all facial shapes look thinner since they add a bit of asymmetry. If you have a high forehead, bangs are the perfect remedy. For a soft look keep your bangs wispy. For a more dramatic look you may want to have heavy fringe like Kim Kardashian. You can see from the picture how her new bangs changed up her looks.

http://www.dailygossip.org/kim-kardashian-flaunts-new-hairstyle-in-2012-2148
Daily Gossip

In the second picture Catherine Zeta Jones has long bangs that frame her face with a half updo. You can wear this look parted in the center like Catherine, or on one side with a deep part. If you want to wear your hair off your face, pull your bangs back to one side and secure them with a pretty clip or barrette. Soft side bangs are best for women over 50 since they soften your appearance and add a youthful look.

http://www.redbookmag.com/beauty-fashion/tips-advice/bangs-how-to-hairstyles
Redbook

Bangs are very trendy, but you can’t just grab the front of your hair and start chopping. You need to take your face shape and your hairstyle into consideration first. Ask your stylist for recommendations on the type of bangs which would look best on you. Let her know before she starts to cut your hair if you want bangs. She will need to blend them into your haircut to look natural. She can also show you the different options you have to style them. If you want to change your looks without a big commitment, try bangs for a change.

Hairstyles in the News January 11, 2012 – Oklahoma City Hairstylist

Welcome to the first edition of Hairstyles in the News for 2012! The New Year is a time for resolutions and new beginnings. Hairstyles are no exception and the latest trend is short hair. This week we’ll look at some of the most popular and upcoming trends in short hair for women. If you see a style you like, ask your stylist for recommendations to make it work for your face shape and lifestyle.

Style Bistro

Tina Mojorino had her hair styled in a cute layered cut at Fox’s “Napoleon Dynamite” Sound-A-Like contest. You can get this style by asking your stylist for a short layered cut and randomly curling sections of your hair vertically on your curling iron. Use some styling paste to piece out the curls and give your hair more definition.

Style Bistro

Michelle Williams had her hair cut in a cute pixie at at the 2012 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala. The pixie continues to be a very popular hairstyle. Michelle’s is cut very short and worn simply. Pixies can be worn many different ways and look great straight, wavy or curly.

Style Bistro

Jenna Elfman attended the premiere reception for Showtime’s “Shameless” Season 2 with her hair cut in a short angled bob with long side fringe. This is a good cut if you have a high forehead or very square jaw as the side fringe adds a bit of softness to your face.

Short Hairstyles

Jenny McCarthy’s longer blonde angular bob is an example of a style that will add some definition to your face. This is a great look for round faces since the deep side part helps to create the illusion of an oval face shape. The length is a bit longer and frames her face very well.

Short Hairstyles

Brook Burns’ wavy cut is very feminine and flatters almost every face shape. To get this look you can use hot rollers or a curling iron. If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, all you need is a bit of texture spray to bring out the natural wave pattern.

Allure

Model Tao Okamoto’s bowl cut makes a statement with its angles and heavy bangs. This is not a cut for the faint of heart, but if you’ve got the moxie to pull it off it is a stunning style. Use anti-frizz spray and a flat iron if your hair is not straight.

That’s all for this week. Short hair isn’t for everyone, but if you want a change of pace you may want to give it a try. Always remember, hair will grow back so no style is forever. Until next week, be safe and keep your eye out for the next celebrity hair trend.

A bun is an expression of eternal elegance. If you want an elegant but simple hairstyle, a bun is a great choice. Depending on your dress, a bun could be simple or complex. Don’t forget to tell your hairdresser about your dress combo! If you have a sparkle dress combo that speaks for itself, you will want to reach out for a simple bun with no volume. The desire to drop a few locks will let you go to the “girls look”. If you wear a simple dress combination, then you can go all the way (with your hair)! Lift its volume and make it glamorous and all eyes will be riveted to you and your hair.

Wavy hair is always an option. Women with wavy hair can look gorgeous and can’t make a mistake if they accentuate the waves. Wavy hair usually acts predictably, but will complement everyone’s make up and point out anyone’s femininity and make a passionate looking woman. Wavy hair is ideal when you want to be seductive and at the same time relaxed and confident. Make sure you tell your hairdresser what it is you really want.

If you have thought that perfectly straight hair is boring, you are wrong! So if you have or you wish to have straight hair, don`t worry, you will not miss out on charm. Straightened hair stands out and emphasizes our sex appeal and all the facial features become more accentuated. If you have bangs your look gets a whole new dimension, too!

A ponytail is also an option in a New Year`s Eve! It can be a glamorous hairstyle, too. It wouldn`t be just totally simple if you twist the hair to get a wavy tail, and you will want to get a stylish haircut. You will look super-fun if you tie it extremely high and set hair to fall on a side.

For those who can’t make decisions, your hairdresser has a solution. You can get half of your hair wavy and a half straightened. The top of the hair is lifted and tightly attached, while the lower part is dispersed in various directions. This seemingly simple haircut can be an elegant evening hairstyle if we given enough volume.

Whatever style you chose this New Year’s Eve, go out and have fun and be safe and have a Happy New Year!

Medications and Medical Procedures May Cause Hair Loss – Oklahoma City Hair Salon

Hair loss can be caused by many things. Hereditary plays an important part in hair loss for men and women. Men normally experience hair loss in a horseshoe formation, while women usually experience thinning at the crown and hair line. Hair loss can be heart breaking no matter what age it appears. Did you know some medications and medical procedures can contribute to or cause hair loss?

If you experience unexplained hair loss, be sure to ask your doctor about your medications. If you’ve just gone through a medical procedure and start to lose hair, ask your doctor to be sure there is no underlying medical condition. There are ways to combat hair loss, but it is important to know the cause so that you can be treated effectively.

Medications

Beta-blockers used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) can cause hair loss. These include Lopressor and Toprol XL (metoprolol), and Inderal (propranolol). Blood thinners such as warfarin and heparin may cause hair loss or thinning. Indomethacin, an arthritis medication, and the gout medications allopurinol and colochicine may cause thinning of your hair. Lithium used to treat bipolar disorder and other psychological conditions can also cause hair loss. Cancer medications used in chemotherapy may cause a total loss of your hair depending on their strength and the duration of your treatment. Birth control pills can cause women who have a genetic tendency for hair loss to experience thinning and loss of hair.

Medical Treatments

Radiation treatments for cancer may cause hair loss. Up to six months after surgery you may experience temporary thinning of your hair, this usually clears up after a few months. Any medical procedure which involves anesthesia carries the risk of thinning hair and hair loss. The good news is this condition is usually temporary and your hair will return to its original thickness after three to four months.

If you do experience hair loss after starting a new medication, talk to your doctor and he may be able to prescribe an alternative for you, or adjust the strength of the medicine. Thinning of your hair and hair loss can be symptoms of hypothyroidism, menopause, poor nutrition, anemia and other medical conditions. It is always wise to consult your doctor if you begin to see your hair thinning. There are products on the market today that can help to reverse or slow down hair loss. Your stylist can help you monitor your hair with regular visits. She has the training and experience to recognize problems when they arise.
