Top 3 Iconic Hairstyles of the 20th Century – Hair Salon Oklahoma City

A recent poll of UK Hairdressing Council members has shown a definite trend toward retro hairstyles. Retro styles beat out “The Rachel” from the TV show Friends and Victoria Beckham’s stylish bob. In this country we see a similar trend toward iconic hairstyles of the 20th century. Big hair is showing up on the runway and at events worn by celebrities and models. Short pixie styles have been popular for most of this decade and even the beehive has been revamped with a 21st century twist. Hairstyles, like fashion, run in cycles and right now the iconic styles of the late 20th century are being reborn for today’s woman.

Number 3 Twiggy’s Pixie

Twiggy was the number one fashion model in the 1960’s. Her slim looks and boyish pixie cut changed the face of fashion for many decades and her influence is still being felt today. Today’s pixie cuts run the gamut from short and spiky to slicked back and smooth. A pixie is extremely easy to wear and looks great on almost every face shape.

Number 2 Marilyn’s Curls

Marilyn Monroe is the epitome of sexy. She is still held up to be the standard of a woman’s beauty. What makes Marilyn so sexy is her lush figure and stunning blonde hair. Her full curls are sexy and extremely feminine. Today we see her style interpreted as long sexy curls worn loosely to frame a woman’s face or brushed out and formed into soft waves.

Number 1 Audrey Hepburn’s French Roll

Sydney Morning Herald

Audrey Hepburn’s French Roll is the most requested style in the UK. It is a classic look for special occasions and has been popular since she wore it in Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961. The French Roll evokes a classic and royal feeling that any woman would enjoy wearing to the prom, a wedding, a special night out or anytime she wants to feel like a queen.

As this century continues more hairstyles will come and go, but these three iconic looks will always be with us in one form or another. Ask your stylist to make them yours by tailoring the cut and style to your face shape and lifestyle. Take inspiration from these styles and find a look you can make your very own.

Hairstyles in the News February 28, 2011

Welcome to this week’s Hairstyles in the News! This week our celebrity favorites have new looks, walked down the red carpet and are looking great over 40 and even 50. This year’s Oscars saw their fair share of stunning gowns and hair. Maybe you got some inspiration for a new style for your next special occasion or saw a style this week you’d like to try. Ask your stylist to adapt one for you. She has the experience and knowledge to make a celebrity style truly yours.

Jennifer Aniston has always been a trendsetter ever since she wore “The Rachel” on Friends. Now the lovely star has a medium length blunt bob that is very flattering. This cut frames her face and draws attention away from her wide jaw. Granted, Jennifer would look great in almost any cut, but this one is a keeper.

Everyone is talking about Justin Bieber’s new grown up haircut. Just in has even donated his hair to Ellen to be auctioned off for the charity, Gentle Barn. Justin’s new haircut makes him look very mature and is a great change from his signature swoop he’s had for years.

Reese Witherspoon looked very polished at the 2011 Oscars. Her blond hair was pulled up and back with a bit of height in the front. You can get this look by pulling your hair back and securing it with clips and bobby pins camouflaged by the fall of your ponytail. Tease the front and then smooth your hair with a large brush. Plenty of hair spray or freeze spray will keep ypur style looking great all night.

Sharon Stone also looked stunning at this year’s Oscars with a very dramatic updo with maximum height. Teasing your hair is the key to this look. Pull your hair up in small sections and with a fine tooth comb work from the roots to the ends gently pulling the comb through your hair in short strokes. Once you’ve achieved the lift you want, take the front section and use a brush to smooth it over your teased hair. Day old hair works best for this look as it is not as slick and smooth as freshly washed hair.

Alfre Woodward’s youthful flippy style looks great on the over 40 star. This modified layered shag looks great on a woman of any age. Alfre’s style shows us that just because you’re over 40 you don’t have to have boring hair.

Style Life Goes Strong

Annie Potts looks very cute in this short side swept style. The short wispy layers don’t over power her delicate features and the side part adds softness to her features. This is a great style for women who are on the petite side and looks great on Annie.

Blythe Danner crushes the stereotype that a woman over 50 has to have short hair. Blythe looks quite lovely in large loose curls. Her side part softens her features and the length is just right to be feminine yet still polished.

That’s it for this week. Do you have a favorite celebrity hairstyle? Ask your stylist to tailor it to your face shape and lifestyle. Break out of the mold and try something new for spring. Get a new color or try a new length and see what the celebrities already know, change is good.
