New Year

January 11, 2012 By Anastasia Nam

Hairstyles in the News January 11, 2012 – Oklahoma City Hairstylist

Welcome to the first edition of Hairstyles in the News for 2012! The New Year is a time for resolutions and new beginnings. Hairstyles are no exception and the latest trend is short hair. This week we’ll look at some of the most popular and upcoming trends in short hair for women. If you see a style you like, ask your stylist for recommendations to make it work for your face shape and lifestyle.

Style Bistro

Tina Mojorino had her hair styled in a cute layered cut at Fox’s “Napoleon Dynamite” Sound-A-Like contest. You can get this style by asking your stylist for a short layered cut and randomly curling sections of your hair vertically on your curling iron. Use some styling paste to piece out the curls and give your hair more definition.

Style Bistro

Michelle Williams had her hair cut in a cute pixie at at the 2012 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala. The pixie continues to be a very popular hairstyle. Michelle’s is cut very short and worn simply. Pixies can be worn many different ways and look great straight, wavy or curly.

Style Bistro

Jenna Elfman attended the premiere reception for Showtime’s “Shameless” Season 2 with her hair cut in a short angled bob with long side fringe. This is a good cut if you have a high forehead or very square jaw as the side fringe adds a bit of softness to your face.

Short Hairstyles

Jenny McCarthy’s longer blonde angular bob is an example of a style that will add some definition to your face. This is a great look for round faces since the deep side part helps to create the illusion of an oval face shape. The length is a bit longer and frames her face very well.

Short Hairstyles

Brook Burns’ wavy cut is very feminine and flatters almost every face shape. To get this look you can use hot rollers or a curling iron. If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, all you need is a bit of texture spray to bring out the natural wave pattern.

Allure

Model Tao Okamoto’s bowl cut makes a statement with its angles and heavy bangs. This is not a cut for the faint of heart, but if you’ve got the moxie to pull it off it is a stunning style. Use anti-frizz spray and a flat iron if your hair is not straight.

That’s all for this week. Short hair isn’t for everyone, but if you want a change of pace you may want to give it a try. Always remember, hair will grow back so no style is forever. Until next week, be safe and keep your eye out for the next celebrity hair trend.

Hillary Duff is looks charming in a simple updo. This is a great look for knocking around town and for a special night out. Use a medium to heavy hold hairspray to keep it all together. One of the secrets that hairstylists know is that day old hair is much easier to style into an updo that freshly washed hair. Another reason this is a great get up and go style.

Curly Nikki

Singer Leela James shows us this week that natural curls are beautiful. Leela claims she’s never had a relaxer and she gets this style by braiding her hair when it is wet, letting it air dry and then brushing through the curls and teasing it into a spectacular afro. Deep conditioning is the key to keeping natural hair soft and manageable, at least twice a month. Use an anti-frizz product and if you want more definition in your curls you can use a paste or wax to piece them out. At night re-braid your hair and wrap your head with a silk scarf to protect your hair.

Nikki Minaj made heads turn earlier this month as she exited the BBC 1 studios. Her high pink hair is reminiscent of cotton candy and certainly makes a statement. Your hairstylist could tame this down and give you a similar look with a bit less height. Whether you have the guts to pull of the color, well that is completely up to you.

What week would be complete without a nod to Rhianna? Seen here in a wild red wig, Rhianna stays true to her reputation of always being on the cutting edge of fashion. Wigs are a great way to switch up your look without the commitment of a haircut. Kimberly Caldwell at the WTB Spring 2011 Fashion Show looks lovely in an asymmetrical wedge with soft curls. This haircut if very versatile and can be worn like Kimberly’s with pretty curls or straight and sleek. The wedge has been popular for many decades ever since Dorothy Hamill wore one on the ice in the late 1970’s. Today’s wedges are less constructed and more relaxed, but this is a style that flatters almost every face shape.

Christian Bale was seen recently with long hair and a beard. Long hair is still in style and Christian looks very handsome in a beard.

New Years Resolutions for 2011 for Your Hair

New Years is the traditional time to review your life and make New Years resolutions. Your beauty regime needs to be updated from time to time as your needs change and new products become available. Now is a great time to take a look at what is working in your hair care and what needs some improvement.

As you age and the seasons change you will need to switch up the products you use to meet your hair’s needs. Women going through menopause may face thinning hair and dry scalp from the reduced production of estrogen in their bodies. Young men and women may have oily scalp and need a clarifying shampoo to cleanse their hair of the styling products they use. No matter what hair care needs you may have there are some general guidelines to make sure you’re caring for your hair the best way you can.

  • Use professional hair care and styling products. Your stylist can recommend the best products for your hair type and texture. Professional products are formulated to be gentle on your hair and scalp and to protect your hair color.
  • Wash your hair every other day. Unless your scalp and hair get very oily by the end of the day, it is better for you to wash your hair every other day. This helps to prevent breakage and split ends because you won’t be washing away the natural oils that lubricate your scalp and keep your hair healthy.
  • Cut down on the use of high heat appliances. Heat from curling irons, blow dryers and flat irons dries out your hair, makes your hair color fade, and can cause damage to the hair shaft. Give your hair a break and let it air dry when you can. When you do use high heat appliances be sure to use a protective product that helps your hair stay strong and shiny.
  • Keep up on your haircuts. Ideally you should get a trim every four to six weeks depending on how fast your hair grows. Regular haircuts and trims keep split ends from forming and keeps your hair looking salon fresh.
  • Go to your stylist to get your hair colored and highlighted. Over the counter color and bleach products are very harsh and contain a developer that is much too strong for most hair. Your stylist will use the correct strength of developer and mix a hair color formula specifically for you. She will also keep track of the formula she uses so that you will get the perfect color every time.
  • Stick with your stylist. Once your find a stylist you love, stick with her. She can monitor your hair and scalp and alert you if you develop any conditions you should address. She will also be familiar with your hair and be able to give you a great cut every time.

These are some resolutions to start you out in 2011. Don’t forget that your stylist is your best resource for great hair and hair care. Take advantage of her education and experience to help you looking your best all year.

Upcoming Holiday 2010 Trends

Although Halloween is just behind us, the Holiday Season is fast approaching. What are the trends this year for holiday parties and get togethers? Big hair, metallic eye shadow and red lipstick are upcoming trends that any woman can incorporate into her look. Big hair had its heyday back in the ’80s and while today’s take on big hair isn’t quite so big and beautiful, you can have a full glamorous look easily with the right cut and the right products. Big hair works best on shoulder length or longer hair.

First wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. These products contain ingredients that help boost your hair’s volume and keep it up.

Next use a mousse or styling gel that will give you lots of body and shine. Flip your head over and blow dry your hair until it is almost dry concentrating on the root area. Stand up, flip your hair back and continue to use your blow dryer scrunching with your fingertips.

Apply a heat protecting product and use a large barrel curling iron throughout your hair. You can then apply a setting spray or give your roots a bit of a backcomb to really go all out with the big hair theme.

Your last step is a firm hold spray and then you’re ready to go.

Match this with pretty metallic eyeshadow in gold or copper and red lips and you will be on trend this holiday season and looking great. Start with a great haircut and professional styling products recommended by your stylist and you can look great through the New Year and beyond.
