Afro Punk Hair – Oklahoma City Hair Stylist

It doesn’t matter whether you’re interested in punked out dreadlocks or a jazzy Mohawk, there are certain rules to follow (or break) if you’re going after an Afro punk look. The Afro punk style is an alternative black trend that’s been spearheaded by Roscoe Dash and Busta Rhymes, but taken to various extremes by strong, eccentrics everywhere. In order to pull off this look, you need to be willing to make a time commitment to styling your hair and then prepare yourself to start breaking all the rules.

Busta Rhymes

The punk look for African-Americans uses a variety of different tools from hair dye and body glitter, to chalk, and wearable hair strands. Using these tools, hair cuts can be complemented and given an extra boost of pizzazz. By using a combination of different tools and techniques anyone can get this look and make it look singularly unique.

It’s important that however you decide to cut and style your hair, that you keep the use of chemicals to a minimum. At the same time, in order to make your hair look like you meant for it to look the way you’re styling it, you’re going to need to use hydrating conditioners and oil sheen to keep it in tip-top shape. Hair that’s broken and dry doesn’t look stylish, it looks unhealthy. If you aren’t prepared to take the extra time required to maintain your style, Afro punk may not be right for you.

Rihanna is a great example of someone who actively wears the Afro punk style. Her stylist first relaxes the texture of her hair and then cuts it and shapes it with a razor to give it that edgy look. Asymmetry is one of the defining features of the Afro punk style and Rihanna demonstrates this with her Mohawk and shaved head. Creating drastic asymmetry is one way to make sure that your Afro punk style will make an impact.

Using permanent color to create strong contrasts is another important feature of Afro punk. Don’t attempt this at home by yourself. See a stylist to get positive results. The hair color available at the salon is less damaging to the hair, which is extremely important with Afro punk. If your hair is brittle and unhealthy, that’s what people will notice, not the creative and unique appearance of your style.

If you’re just starting out with an Afro punk do, start by getting a Mohawk. Roscoe Dash is a rap star who’s worked hard on his signature look. His hair cuts are attention-grabbing and all done without chemicals. His hair is simply cut into a basic Mohawk style and then patterns are carefully shaved into both of the sides of the head.

Permanent Beachy Waves without the Beach – Hair Stylist OKC

If you’ve ever noticed how great your hair looks after a day of basking in the sun at the beach, then it makes sense why you’d want to have permanent “beach hair”. Beachy waves don’t require a lot of effort or maintenance, which is what makes it so awesome for girls on the go. A Beach Wave perm can help you look your best every day without all the fuss of curling irons or salt water.

You can only get a Beach Wave perm at a salon, so don’t go shopping for beach hair perming solution at the local grocery store. It’s a special formula that creates a subtle wave to your hair using special curling tools while the perm is processing. The solution is specially developed as well to create softness and a beachy “bounce”. The final result is a very soft, loose curl that’s very natural looking and easy to style. It doesn’t look at all like a traditional, tightly curled perm, but instead gives the look of natural waves.

The soft look of beach hair was the inspiration for this type of perm which makes use of soft foam blocks instead of rollers to create the loose waves that women everywhere envy. You can’t do this type of perm on your own at home, so you’ll need to talk to a stylist about how to achieve this ultra-sexy look. Obviously, you’ll need to have medium to long length hair to really get the most out of your beach style and ideally, your hair should be healthy to take advantage of this great look.

Not every stylist is qualified to give the beach wave perm, so you may need to shop around for this service. A specialized perming solution is used to get the right effect. Beachy hair perms are a relatively new development on the hair style scene so make sure you do your research before setting up an appointment for a perm at your local salon. Curls need to be set in the proper way to get the look of beach waves, otherwise you may not achieve the look you’re hoping for.

Of course, if a perm is too much of a commitment, you could always get yourself an arsenal of styling products and tools like different sized curling irons and salt water spray, but wouldn’t it be nice to get up every morning and enjoy long, loosely curled flowing locks? Though a perm may seem like something straight out of the 1980’s, the fact is, today’s chemical solutions are much kinder to hair and produce much more aesthetically pleasing results.

Hair Styles That Channel the Punk Vibe – OKC Hair Salon

Some people say that there is no such thing as Emo. Or Scene. Even Goth isn’t really real according to nay-sayers. Rather, all these styles are actually just sub-categories of Punk. Believe it or not, Punk has made different faces and whether you ascribe to the idea that Emo, Scene, and Goth are actually knock-offs or not, these various styles do actually have a lot in common.

If you’re in the market for a punk cut, there are plenty of different options to choose from. It’s important to come up with a general direction for your cut before you head to your stylist because of the immense variety of choices available. Punk, Emo, Scene, and Goth are all characterized by their colorful, eclectic, and original expressiveness. Don’t expect for your stylist to tell you how to go punk! Going punk is an individual statement. It’s an opportunity to take a risk. Do some research before you get to the salon and then talk with your stylist about your ideas.

Do you want your hair to be short or long? It’s possible to do either or even both with punk! Shaving one side of your head and leaving long locks on the other side isn’t all that uncommon among those who fully commit to punk. But take some time to consider your overall look and find a flattering punk cut that will bring out your best features. In order to qualify as “punk”, your cut needs to be edgy and a little risky. A too-conservative do just simply won’t qualify!

Besides a hair and fashion style, punk is also an attitude and even a subculture. The style has been influenced by different cultures and even artistic movements and music. As a result, it has its own rhythm. Its own life. And it’s up to you to come up with a way to express yourself using the punk look as an overall direction for your hair. Don’t just get your hair cut punk. Color it punk too! Colors are as diverse as individuals themselves. Be creative and express yourself, but above all, make sure that the final results will turn heads.

Mohawks are iconic punk hair styles, but don’t strive for conformity. Be sure to seek out a stylist who has a creative edge and is capable of thinking outside the box. Choose colors that most adequately represent you. Perhaps you’re moody and dark or loud and vibrant. Your hair color can amplify your personality. And take some risks when it’s time for the cut. As long as the hair cut is creative and truly unique, then it will qualify as “punk”. When it’s all said and done, you should be getting noticed and turning some heads among the more conservative folks in society.

The 1980’s have inspired all kinds of fashion trends as well as hair styles that have been renovated for a more modern age. For example, side braids have made a big comeback and women with long hair can make the most of this style with a little help from their stylist. Though not the easiest to do if you’re working alone, side braids are relatively quick and simple if you go to a salon. Get a loose or messy braid or one that is styled more tightly, depending on the event and what you plan to wear. Side braids come in several different varieties and they can be done in several different directions on your head to get the most flattering look.

Another option for women with long, thin hair is the bun. Everyone knows what a bun is, but these days, many women are wearing them down lower at the nape of the neck. Done properly, a bun can make your hair look full and elegant. With the help of a stylist, you can hit the town with a bun that looks sophisticated and fashionable.

And then there’s the hair pouf, which is a style that’s definitely unique and eye-catching. Backcombing and bobby pins are necessary to get the look right along with super-strong hair spray. Your stylist can help you get the look right without leaving bobby pins exposed or hairs out of place. A bump hairpiece can help add volume to the topmost part of the head. The extra lift can help make this style attention-grabbing and give your thin hair the look of more volume and thickness.

Rather than all up or all down, a half-up, half-down hairstyle for long, thin hair can be quite appealing. Using special salon-grade products, your stylist will be able to create a look of volume to your hair and perhaps a few waves. A few tendrils around the face can add to the femininity of this look.

Even though your hair is thin, you can still maximize the effects of a special occasion do if you have long tresses. Visit your stylist to learn more about how your long hair can be done up (or down) into styles that will complement your outfit and look appropriate at the big event.

Great Medium-Length Hairstyles for Weddings

Whether you’re the bride-to-be or a supportive brides’ maid, if you have medium-length hair, you’ve got lots of hair style options to choose from that will complement your attire. Medium length locks are surprisingly versatile when it comes to special occasions, but you may want to pay a visit to the salon to the get the perfect special-occasion look that will last and last throughout the entire day and into the night. No matter whether your hair is straight or curly, there’s an updo for you that will top off your overall look for some unforgettable photos and great times!

Most women mistakenly believe that long hair is the best length for special occasions, but, in fact, medium length hair can be styled using special tools that will make it look longer and more voluminous than it really is with less weight and less hassle than long hair. And, of course, there are permanent or temporary hair extensions that can create surprising effects in medium-length hair. You stylist can help you put together a very formal and yet trendy look you’ll never forget.

Side sweeps are particularly popular with women these days who have a special event like a wedding their future. Using some bobby pins, heavy-duty hairspray, and a little bit of finesse, your stylist can put together something elegant and yet very hip that will last all day and into the night. Side sweeps are best done on straight or curly medium-length hair because hair that’s too long can make this style heavy and hard to manage.

Depending on the length or your hair, a low bun may be a possibility too. Even if your hair isn’t quite long enough for a full bun, a hair piece may be able to give the illusion of long hair, which can be a fun, attention-getting change. A high bun, or upswept hair on the top of the head is also a possibility to create a regal appearance for that special day. Once again, your stylist may have some tricks up his or her sleeve to give the illusion of longer, fuller hair for a day.

If you have curly locks, you may be able to get away with an upsweep or low bun as well, but a French pleat or retro appearance may also be appealing for the big day. A lot of celebrities today wear curly hair pinned up using retro metallic or diamond –studded clips to create a believable flapper-look that brings out the femininity in any woman. Getting retro hairstyles just right takes some technique and it’s definitely best to go to a salon for help if you want it to look just right. Curly hair can be put to good use using this style, however.

Formal But Not Too Formal Hair Styles for a Semi-Formal Event – Oklahoma City Salon

It can be remarkably humiliating to choose the wrong hair style for a formal or semi-formal event, which is why many women go to the salon to make sure they get it right. Going too casual with your hair can dress down a very respectable evening gown. Hair that’s too formal can make you look a little foolish too. Figuring out the right balance for your hair at a formal or semi-formal event can make or break your overall appearance, but don’t worry, there are styles that can make you look elegant and yet not overdone at any event. Rather than take your chances, go to the salon to get hair that will last through the duration of your semi-formal or formal bash.

A good way to keep your hair within safe boundaries at an event that requires special attention for your hair is to pull some of the hair up and leave the rest of it down. A few elegant tendrils can help give your hair a very balanced formal, yet relaxed look. But don’t overdo it. Discuss the event with your stylist to come up with a do that will keep this balanced formal-but-balanced appeal.

Braids have made a come-back recently in a big way. There are a variety of different types of braids that can give your hair a slightly different textural finish. Not only are braids done at the back of the head, but the trend is for the hair to be braided in innovative ways. For example,, a braid can be done that looks like a headband sitting just above the hairline. The front half of the hair can also be braided around to the back of the head in an attractive sweeping line that is both sophisticated and yet fun.

For something simpler and yet just as eye-catching, a half-French twist can satisfy your need for something formal and yet not too formal. Shoulder-length hair is perfect for this do because it isn’t too heavy after the style has been fastened in place. Leaving some of the hair flowing free to keep the half-French twist from over-doing it on the big day. The hair that’s left out of the twist can be styled in any number of different ways. Your stylist could curl it or crimp it, or straighten it depending on your tastes.

And finally, if braids or French twists don’t interest you, then you might want to go retro with pinned curls or do something more playful like a spiked bun. Both of these looks can take some finesse to pull off so don’t be shy about having your stylist make them happen before the big bash. Elegantly pinned curls bring out the best in any woman. Spiky buns, in contrast, are just plain fun and flirty. Both are perfect for medium-length locks and if you have them done by your stylist, should fulfill the need for something semi-formal.

Hair for Squares – Oklahoma City Hair Stylist

If you have a square face shape then you may struggle sometimes with finding the right hair cut or style to flatter it. The angular features of a square face can be quite attractive when paired with a hair cut and style that flatters those features. On the other hand, if you style your hair without regard for your face shape, you may not be getting the effect you’re really after. Use your mane to create an attractive appearance with a square face shape. It’s not as difficult as you might think, once you get the basic principles under your thumb.

Even gorgeous celebrities take pause to think about their face shape before they cut their hair. Miley Cyrus, Lily Adridge, and Jessica Biel have all used their hair to make the most of their face shape. Though you’ll need to consider the length of your hair, the texture, and the amount of time you’re willing to spend on your do each day as well as your face shape, taking your cues from some square-faced celebrities can create outcomes that you can be happy about.

If you want a longer length to your hair, then you might consider creating layers that gradually get longer and longer. Situate that first layer at about the chin area. This will help to offset the strong, angular jawline that characterizes the square-shaped face. Make sure that your layers turn in toward your face as well. Layers that curl inward will help move the eye toward the center of the face to make it look less wide. In contrast, layers that flip outward from the head will broaden a square shaped face. This can make even a thin square-shaped face look chubby.

If you’re after super short hair, make sure that you get a do that’s going to create length in your face. Miley Cyrus has gotten a lot of press for her pixie cut which creates extra height on top of her head. That extra height has given her face the illusion of being longer, which is flattering. Extremely short hair like this can make a bold statement, but on a square-face it can be quite attractive.

And finally, if you have a square face consider bangs when you go to get your next hair cut. A rounded fringe cut can help to create a frame around the outer edges of the face, which draws the eye inward. The bangs should be rounded with the outer edges just slightly longer than the center by about an inch to an inch and a half. By rounding out the bangs, you’ll softer the angular features of the face considerably. The rounded fringe has a decidedly slimming effect on the face.

Basics of Scene Hair – Oklahoma City Hair Salon

Scene hair is the latest craze since the emo look evolved. Teens everywhere are making this new style their own by following some basic hair style rules. Though similar in many ways to emo, scene hair has some important differences. Essentially, the scene look is a bit brighter and bit lighter than emo. Though scene hair borrows a lot of tricks from emo, it isn’t quite as dark. With scene hair, you can have the striking appearance of emo, but with a slightly more upbeat riff to it.

English: My scene hair ^.^
English: My scene hair ^.^ (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

First and foremost, scene hair is thinner on the bottom, while it’s thicker and teased up top. The hair that sits below your jaw should be thinned out considerably in order to achieve the overall shape of scene. Layers should be choppy to help add to the volume that’s possible on top. There are many variations in the way that people use layers to create a unique look. The distance between layers will alter the overall look of the do. You can put the short layers in the back of the head and the longer ones in front or vice versa to change the look. Layers may random or cut to frame out the face. It’s up to you.

Razor cut or side-swept bangs are important. Generally, the bangs are parted far off to one side and the hair lands right at the eyebrows. The bangs may also be teased or kept straight. The variations keep it fun! “But it’s important that the hair is healthy (no split ends, please!) and the cut is super-sharp and very straight in order to keep the look of scene hair.

Originality is key with scene hair and a lot of people make use of hair extensions to keep their look unique from day to day. Even if your hair is short, you can create an awesome, longer appearance to your hair using extensions purchased at the salon. There are clip in extensions and, of course extensions that can be attached to the existing hair by your stylist for a slightly longer-lasting do. You can use extensions to get you through an awkward period with your hair while it’s growing out. Whether you’re hoping to do a grunge look or something more along the lines of a “pretty girl”, you can use extensions to get the look you’re going for.

Hair color is also really important to finish off the scene look. Often, scene kids will opt for dark brown or black mixed with a variety of other bright colors. It’s best to head to the salon if you’re hoping to achieve a really sleek scene look because it’s easy to botch hair color at home. There are a lot of crazy colors available through your stylist to inspire you. Be creative and above all, unique in your pickings.

5 Summer Hair Care Tips

Summer can be hard on your hair with humidity, sun, and heat. Exposing your hair to the elements is an everyday fact of life in the summer, but there are some easy tips you can use to keep your tresses looking and feeling healthy, shiny, and strong. One of the things your hair needs in the summer is extra moisture. A leave in conditioner is a quick way to protect your hair and keep the humidity from making your hair turn into a frizzy mess. Argan oil is the perfect conditioner. It absorbs into your hair without leaving it greasy.

Another way to keep the frizz under control is to wear your hair in braids on especially humid days. Braids give you a chance to show off your creativity, and there are several styles to choose from. You can pull the front of your hair back and form two braids to hold your hair back in a half updo, or braid the entire front of your hair and pull it back into a pretty ponytail. Another option is a fishtail braid either down the center of your back, or off to one side. Fishtail braids are formed by dividing your hair into two sections, and then bringing small sections from each side over the main sections. Fishtail braids have been seen this summer on runways and red carpets.

Nothing is more classic than a pretty headscarf. Think of the Hollywood starlets of the 1950’s and how they wore their headscarves wrapped under their chins and then around their neck for a sexy and cool look. Think of Audrey Hepburn riding in her car with the top down and you’ll get the picture. Even Queen Elizabeth knows the value of a headscarf for keeping her hair protected and under control. A great place to find headscarves is in a vintage or thrift store.

If the weather looks dicey and you have to head out, why not try one of this summer’s hottest looks? A slicked back ponytail keeps your hair under control, and if you get caught in the rain it won’t mess up your look. Use a gel on wet hair and comb it back into a sleek ponytail. You can add a pretty hair tie or clip for a pop of color.

These are just a few ideas to help keep you looking and feeling cool during the hot months of summer. Humidity, sun exposure and wind can combine to make your hair look and feel dry and brittle. Remember to condition your hair and protect it with a scarf or hat when you’ll be outside, and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful hair all summer long.

The Pompadour and Quiff

For connoisseurs of retro hair styles, the summer of 2013 has a lot to offer. Both men and women should get ready for “big” hair in the form of both the pompadour and the quiff. These are unisex hairstyles that have been gaining in popularity and making a gigantic comeback. Modifications of these hairstyles allow salon-goers to assert their own unique personalities while still embracing history and hitting the trends head-on.

Related distantly to the Mohawk, a quiff is a hair style that incorporates elements of a pompadour do and a 1950’s flat-top into one unique look. The style was popular in the 1980’s in Europe and it seems to make sense that it would have resurgence of popularity while the fashion trends are currently walking the perimeter around 1980’s clothing styles. A variety of different types of quiffs can be can be successfully sculpted and the style is appropriate for both males and females.

The pompadour, is another style that has unisexual appeal, though variations of it have been developed specifically for men and women. The hair is cut especially so that it can be swept up off the face and worn up high above the forehead. Sometimes, the hair can also be swept upwards around the side of the face and the back of the head also.

Unlike the quiff, which enjoyed popularity primarily in the 20th century, the pompadour was born during the 18th century, with a major revival in the 1890’s. Among women, the pompadour enjoyed popularity on and off until the 1930’s and 1940’s. Elvis Presley elevated the popularity of the pompadour among men in the 1950’s, but since that time, the hair style has been less visible. Today, however, more and more men and women are bringing the pompadour back into the public eye.

Both long and short hair can be worn in a quiff or a pompadour with a little creativity and styling products. By putting long hair up into a pony tail, hair can be given volume on top of the head to the height necessary for a respectable pompadour. The look can be formal and impressive when styled with care. It can also look risky and rebellious when the style is done with less conventionality.

Combined with attention-getting hair colors that have modernized the quiff and the pompadour, many men and women are enjoying the eye-catching appeal of these hair styles. Female celebrities such as Miley Cyrus have gotten a lot of attention for their cutting-edge style. The variations that are possible with the quiff and the pompadour are appealing to a lot of style-conscious people who like to keep with the trends while maintaining some creative flexibility with their hair

Perming Your Hair: Should You or Shouldn’t You – Oklahoma City Hair Salon

It may be hard to believe, but perms are no longer considered out-of-style in today’s fashion world. Back in the 1980’s, perms were wildly popular, but often unbelievably damaging to the hair. Today’s perms, however, have changed and, it seems, women are more savvy about their hair. While a perm may look fabulous on some types of hair, women know that they’re not appropriate for every set of dreads out there. In the right hands, however, a perm can have striking results that will last up to a year.

A perm can give women hair that flatters their facial features with minimal morning effort. When the perm has been done properly, the wavy, curly look of a perm can soften a woman’s features. The body wave offers women a less striking change by creating soft waves rather than tight curls. Similar to a perm, it can create a certain softness around a woman’s face and add volume to the hair when it’s styled with a blow dryer. Ultimately, the best candidate for a perm or body wave is a woman who is intent on making noticeable textural changes to the hair. Often, the goal that many women are questing after is hair that requires less work to look good. In the right hands, a perm or body wave can do just that.

Unfortunately, however, women who have super-fine hair probably won’t reap the same benefits as women with other types of hair textures. Also, bleaching and highlights can predispose hair to breakage following a perm. If you’ve had some highlighting done on your hair and you really want a perm, consider growing it out. Most hair grows between ½ to 1 inch per month. Women who have had a perm within three months have the same conundrum. A perm over the top of a previous perm can have tragic results for hair.

Today’s perms start tight and slowly soften over time so that women can enjoy a variety of different textures as it grows out. A body wave may be more appropriate for women who are really concerned about the grow-out phase of a perm. Many women choose this option end up with remarkably natural looking results that blend in nicely with the rest of the hair as it grows out.

A great looking perm begins with a haircut that will flatter the face when the end result is unveiled. Women are encouraged to talk with their stylists about finding a look that is both modern and easy to maintain. When done properly, a perm can last up to one year with appropriate maintenance. Using high-quality moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, women can enjoy a completely new, yet healthy look to their hair that lasts and lasts.
