Feathered Hair for a Full Fledged 1980’s Look – Oklahoma City Hair Stylist

The feathered hair look came in in the 1970’s, but became widely popular in the 1980’s among both men and women. A number of 1980’s looks have become popular again recently and some women have capitalized on this look and made it their own in today’s world. Getting your hair to have the Farah Fawcett appearance isn’t easy. You need the right hair cut and the right tools to do the job, but if you succeed at creating a feathered appearance to the hair that is both whimsical and romantic, it will be undeniably sexy.

Normally, feathered hair was cut so that is was long on either side of the head. In most cases, the hair was long enough to cover the ears, although in some instances it could be as long as shoulder length. The hair was not layered, but rather brushed back at the sides using a special technique that gave it a feathery appearance like that of a bird. Feathered hair could be parted at the side or in the center to achieve a desirable look.

Today’s feathered hair styles are usually done on medium length hair which can make it more manageable. Creating a feathered appearance can take some practice and a lot of hair spray to keep the style in place. Using a curling iron, the hair is curled backward away from the face and then, after the iron is removed, the hair is brush back carefully and gently and then immediately sprayed in place with hair spray. Over-spraying the feathered locks can give the hair a sticky, heavy appearance. In contrast, under-spraying can cause the feathered hair to wilt and slowly lose shape over time.

Figuring out how long to curl the hair, the type and size of curling iron to use to achieve the look you’re after and the right hair styling products for your hair type can take some time. It takes some finesse to pull off the look without creating a mess of the final product. Talk with your stylist about getting your hair cut the right length for what you hope to achieve with your style and then ask about recommended products that will hold your hair in place without weighing the hair down too much.

Though feathered hair isn’t hot this season on the runways, it can still be your signature look. This is a unique style that will stand out amidst the crowd. Combining this look with the punked out hair colors available today could add some spice to final product. Just be prepared to spend plenty of time on your feathered hair each day. This is definitely a high-maintenance look that won’t maintain itself without a time commitment on your part.

How to Band Natural Hair – Oklahoma City Hair Salon

Natural hairstyles have become very popular, and with them come special care needs. Natural hair is prone to breakage, and high heat tools add to this tendency. One way to help your hair relax before you style it is to band it. Banding stretches the hair gently without heat. It is one way to protect your natural hair from damage, while making it more manageable. All you need to band your hair are good quality covered ponytail holders. Be sure to get ones that are wide enough to band your hair correctly, and have enough padding protect your hair.

http://beadsbraidsbeyond.blogspot.com/2011/04/banding-faq.html
Beads Braids Beyond

After you wash your hair and towel dry it, use a large tooth comb to detangle it, and apply a leave in conditioner. Section out your hair like you are going to do all over braids. Apply moisturizer to the first section of your hair, and place a covered ponytail holder at the base. Add more holders spacing them a half inch to one inch away from each other. Continue down the section of hair until you reach the ends. Braid the ends which are loose. Repeat this process on all sections of your hair, and let dry overnight.

In the morning you can take the bands out and style your hair. Your hair will be stretched and much easier to braid, twist, or set in flexi-rods. Banding is a great choice for children’s hair. It protects their hair from heat while making it much easier to work with. Ask your stylist for suggestions for moisturizing and conditioning products to protect and nourish your natural hair. She can also help you learn how to band your hair, and give you suggestions about styling.

Flip It for Spring – Oklahoma City Hairstyles

What hairstyle gives you extra body and volume almost effortlessly? What hairstyle is workable for short, medium, and long hair? It’s the flip. While not really technically a hairstyle, it is more of a way to take a deep side part to the next level. The trick is to style your hair as you normally do, then take your hair to one side and flip it. What you’ll get is a very pretty look which is more casual and sexy than a traditional part.

http://www.allure.com/hair-ideas/2013/look-now-the-side-flip-hairstyle#slide=4
Allure.com

One way to get the most volume is to bend over and blow dry your hair while it is flipped over your head. Concentrate the blow dryer stream onto your roots. When your hair is almost dry stand up and flip your hair back in place. What you’ll get is lots of volume and texture. (This works best with medium to long hair.) You can also use a curling iron to form a flip. Curl your hair like you normally would, and then flip it into a side part. Take the curling iron and just curl near the roots at the flip. This also adds lots of volume.

Use root booster, styling paste, volumizing mousse, or gel to help add volume. Hairspray applied near the roots, and then using your fingers to lift the hair, will give you more control and help keep your flip where you want it. So have fun and give your hair a flip. This is one of the hottest new trends for spring, and works on all but very short hair.

Choppy Layered Cuts Short are in Style for Spring 2013 – Oklahoma City Hairstylist

Layers are a great choice for almost any hair texture and thickness. Layers set your hair’s natural wave pattern free, and can add volume to thin hair. Choppy layers are becoming a big trend for Spring 2013 (if you watch General Hospital take a look at Carly’s hair). You have a wide variety of choices from very short to past the shoulder length cuts. Choppy layers work best on straight hair, or hair with just a bit of wave. This cut gives straight hair some movement and depth.

This cut is a choppy short cut. Longer on the crown and the sides than a pixie, this cut gives you many styling options. You can wear it brushed forward as in the picture, with a deep side part, middle part, or sweep your hair back for a slick and sophisticated look. Achieve this look with some styling gel while your hair is wet, blow dry it forward, and then bring out the texture with some texture paste.

http://www.newwomenhaircuts.com/hairstyles/Trendy-Layered-Hairstyles-Layered-Haircuts-
New Women Hairstyles

The next cut is a shoulder length layered cut which is flattering on almost all facial shapes. Face framing layers and the longer length are very flattering for young women of any age because they soften your features. To get this look apply some volumizing mousse to damp hair, and use a round barrel brush with your blow dryer concentrating heat at the roots of your hair. Once your hair is dry you can use a flat iron along with a heat protecting product to straighten your hair. Texturizing paste is also used for this cut to give your hair a choppy yet sleek look.

Choppy textured layers are a great look for almost every woman. They can be trendy or sophisticated. Ask your stylist to help you find a choppy layer style which is best for your hair texture and thickness. She can also recommend professional products to give you the style you want, and keep it looking great between salon visits.

Hair today gone tomorrow – Oklahoma City Hair Extensions

It’s a well known fact that celebrities are a fickle bunch when it comes to styles and how long they last. Look at Rihanna – she has a different style and colour every other week. So it’s no surprise that the latest trend in hair styles this season is chopping it all off – I call it the statement cut.

English: Miley Cyrus singing in concert
English: Miley Cyrus singing in concert (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

So what is a statement hair cut? A cut and colour that screams “I’m having an emotional time right now and I want the world to know about it.” Take Miley Cyrus. Her parents are going through a very public divorce and she is also trying to shake off her Disney persona. Fast forward a couple of months and she shocked her fans when she cut her long extensions and opted for a shoulder length cut… then decided to go the whole hog and cut it all off and bleach it blonde.

The media is suggesting it was a career move or publicity stunt – whatever the reason I say congratulations to Miley on her new look – she looks amazing.

Now how to achieve the haircut – and is it called the Miley Cyrus?

No! It’s called the undercut. An edgy new shaved undercut. If you’re wanting to emulate Miley, her hair is dyed platinum and using a pair of clippers you cut short around the sides and back to get a neat and tidy edge. The top is left very short with only enough hair to spike or slick back. Her style was already short and dyed on both sides and her hair was longer on top for the crop look. Now the top part has been pulled away from her face and trimmed into a boyish wave.  Using a product is definitely needed to achieve this look for hold and shine.

Which undercut style is going to suit you?

The undercut is a personal statement style. If you work in an environment where this hairstyle is going to shock, you may want to reconsider having the undercut. The undercut is a unisex hairstyle where a section of the hair is shaved, allowing a layer of hair to fall over the shaved area. An undercut will suit whatever your face shape is. It just needs to be positioned in a way that will look good on you. Be wary though, undercuts can remove weight and body so they look best on thick hair, not thin or fine hair.

Consider where you want your undercut to be.  The most popular style is to have it on the sides; it looks great and will be noticeable most of the time. If you have it on the bottom of your neck at the back, it will only be revealed when you wear it up.

Consider how deep you want your undercut to be. A subtle shortening of your hair or something closer to a shave? If you want to be more subtle, you can go for a 4-6mm undercut, talk to your hairdresser about best achieving this look – shave or cut?

How much area do you want your undercut to cover? The trend is to have an undercut just on one side; celebrities like Mel B and Rihanna chose this style. You can trim a smaller area, 2 by 3 inches. Or you can remove most of the hair on one side.

If you go for an undercut you think is too short, don’t worry – it all grows back. If you go for an undercut you think is too long, that’s okay because you can always have it trimmed shorter until you’re happy with it.  The best way would be to take in a photo of your desired undercut to your hairdresser.

If you feel like a complete image overhaul the under cut is definitely for you. This drastic cut suits oval shaped faces, long faces and round shaped faces to balance it out. In fact any beautiful face can pull this look off. They are tough, punk like, rock and roll and vulnerable all mixed into one haircut.

Static Hair Solutions – Hair Salon OKC

With winter and the cold weather season upon us, static hair becomes the non-fashion trend we wish we didn’t have to deal with.  Knowing what can cause static hair and how to fight back can keep your hairstyle in fashion during the winter.  Cold weather brings wind, less humid air and low temperatures which all act as a catalyst to negative ion build up on hair.

The Magic of Static Electricity
The Magic of Static Electricity (Photo credit: Dalboz17)

In order to combat hair static electricity, it is essential to know about the science of hair itself.  Hair carries a positive charge and is considered acidic with a 3.5 to 5.5 pH range.  Hair is negatively charged once it crosses over the 7 pH range and becomes alkaline.  Negatively charged hair will suffer from fly-away , static hairstyles.  Chemicals from perms and coloring as well as other styling products can be the root cause of changing the pH of your hair.  When a product says, “pH balanced” it is exactly that, which is a neutral on the pH scale or a 7.  The goal is to keep the pH level within a range of 3.5-5.5 pH in order to keep it positively charged which can lessen static.

During the winter the air holds less moisture so is less humid when compared to summer months.  When there is less humidity in the air it keeps electricity from flowing off the shaft of the hair and then builds up creating static.  To keep moisture in your hair during the cold months choose conditioners that contain moisturizers.  There are also many styling products which are water based rather than petroleum based.  Petroleum based products can cause build up on hair and scalp.  Electricity flows through water, then off hair, so using products which are water based are the best choice.

Knowing your hair and what it may lack can help you know which products you need.  Your stylist can help you with this and has the best knowledge on products and moisturizers.  Natural oils like coconut or avocado can help condition as well as vitamin E.  Over conditioning can cause problems so it is important not to overdo conditioning during the winter.

Tools Of The Trade

Tools Of The Trade

Choosing which type of hair brush, iron or blow dryer can be confusing at times, and it comes down to selecting which tool will get the job done in order to achieve the style and look you want.  The styling tips below should be a great resource to knowing which tool will give you the results you desire.

Martin Wedding
Martin Wedding (Photo credit: Jeffrey Simms Photography)

Selecting the right hair brush during blow drying can make a difference.  There isn’t a one size brush fits all option.  If you want to get coarse or curly hair straighter, a large round brush does the trick while medium-size brushes can give smoothness and added body if your hair is medium to long in length.  Small brushes can really boost short hair by providing volume.

Using attachments like a nozzle or a diffuser on your blow dryer can turn this tool into a great hair styling machine.  Nozzles can direct the flow of air from the dryer, giving you a more precise and smoother dry.  When you use a diffuser you reduce frizz when drying wavy or curly hair.

If you use a flat-iron be sure to keep it moving with medium pressure.  Section your hair as you move the iron in smooth passes.  If you start and stop or press too hard the results might give you the appearance of “dents” to your hair.  Insuring hair is all the way dry is very important before you use your flat-iron.  The heat can damage hair that isn’t completely dry.  Only a wet-to-dry heated flat-iron can be used on damp hair.

If you use a curling-iron it is very important to make sure the ends or very tips of hair get tucked into the curling-iron prior rolling.  If you miss the tip-tuck, the small ends may bend backwards giving a “fishhook” appearance to the curls.

If you are using hot rollers to achieve waves and volume, start by sectioning your hair, then inserting the roller under the section, smoothly roll down towards the scalp.  Rolling in different directions will give you different styles and looks as well as waves.  If you want waves with little volume, have sections in a downward direction and insert the roller at the top of the section, then roll upwards.

There are many different hairstyling tools that can be used daily and understanding which is the right tool to use is as important in knowing how to use the tool to give the style you want.  Your stylist uses many of these tools daily and has helpful information as well as tool tips and tricks that can be helpful to you.

How to Style Soft Silky Waves – Oklahoma City Hairstyles

Soft silky waves are sexy and very feminine. In a recent Tweet, Jessica Alba showed off her new ombre hair color and her signature soft silky waves. Women of all ages are wearing soft waves, and the trend of wearing short hair after 40 is a thing of the past. Now any woman can rock sexy waves no matter what her age.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/26/jessica-alba-hair-blonde-ombre-sin-city-photos-pictures-2012_n_1831266.html?utm_hp_ref=style
Huffington POst

The key to having silky soft hair is moisture. Hair needs moisture and when you use a blow dryer, hot rollers, or a curling iron regularly these tools can sap the moisture out of your hair, and make it dry and brittle. Look for products which contain natural olive oil, sunflower oil, or Argan oil. These are some of the best oils for your hair since they absorb completely, and contain vitamins and antioxidants to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy.

To style soft waves start with a volumizing mousse in towel dried hair. Section your hair out and blow dry it gently with a large barrel brush. You can also flip your hair over your head while you bend down and blow dry the roots first to get maximum volume. When your hair is dry you have two choices; hot rollers or a curling iron. Both will give you curls and waves. To get the hottest look take random sections of your hair and alternate the direction your roll it up. One important step you can’t skip is to let your hair cool completely before you brush it. This will ensure your waves stay bouncy.

After your hair is completely cooled, use a wide paddle brush and gently brush it out. (Don’t worry, you’re not going to brush the waves out.) Next use a bit of styling paste to define the waves, spray your hair with shine spray and hairspray. Now you’ve got a full head of soft, silky, and very sexy waves. Ask your stylist for product recommendations to keep your hair moisturized and healthy looking.

Big Hair Equals Big Style – Oklahoma City Hair Salon

Big hair is still in style this season and will be for some time. One of the great things about big hair is it plays well with curly and wavy hair that is thick. But if you have thin or short hair, you can still have big hair with human hair extensions placed professionally by your stylist. At the 2011 VMA Awards Adele wore her hair styled in a very pretty and feminine style. If you like this style, you can get it in a few easy steps.

Daily Venus Diva

After you shampoo your hair with a volumizing system, apply root booster, and blow dry it. Use a large barrel brush and pull your hair up away from your scalp drawing the blow dryer and brush along the hair shaft. It is easier to handle if you section your hair out first. Another easy way to get mega-volume is to blow dry your hair upside down. Simply bend over and flip your hair over your head, and concentrate the blow dryer’s airstream on your roots.

Once your hair is dry, use large hot rollers all over to give you curl and more volume. Let your hair cool completely and take the rollers out. Next with a natural bristly paddle brush, gently brush your hair out. Create a part from one ear to the other and backcomb the back section of your hair. The more you backcomb, the more volume you will achieve. Once you have the back of your hair backcombed, gently smooth the top layer of hair. Next make a deep side part and with hairspray pull the sides out and define the curls with a curling iron. If you need to, you can backcomb the front and sides a bit, too. Spray the entire style with hairspray and you’ll have a beautiful head of full and gorgeous hair.

Carrie Underwood’s Underpinned Bun Causes a Stir – Oklahoma City Hairstylist

Carrie Underwood caused quite a stir at a CMA function recently. Her fans thought she had cut off her beautiful long hair in favor of a short bob. But upon closer inspection, Carrie had used a very popular method of getting her hair off her neck, and getting a new look without going under the scissors. An underpinned bun is the perfect solution to hot and humid late summer days and nights. This style may look complicated and hard to pull off, but with a bit of practice and plenty of hair pins you can have this look.

http://www.examiner.com/article/carrie-underwood-cut-her-hair-new-style-makes-fans-panic
Examiner

First start out with day old hair since it is not as slick as just washed hair. If you have freshly washed hair, use a bit of hairspray or dry shampoo to give it some texture. Apply a heat protecting product and take random sections of your hair and curl them with a medium barrel curling iron. Alternate curling the sections toward your face and away from it for a messy chic look. Once your hair is dry, spritz it with hairspray and gently brush it out to form waves. Next gather the back of your hair up into a low ponytail and form a bun. Pin the bun up under your hair leaving the front sections loose and wavy. Be sure to use enough pins to hold the bun securely. Use a generous amount of hairspray to keep everything secure and under control.

This style is perfect if you want to keep your long locks, but need to put it up for a special event. An underpinned bun will keep you cool this summer and give you a whole new look. Ask your stylist for help if you can’t get the technique down. She’ll be happy to help you and give you recommendations for professional products to keep your hair and style looking great.

Katy Perry’s Retro Wave Style – Oklahoma City Hairstylist

Katy Perry channeled flappers of long ago with a retro wave style at a charity event last month. She wore her hair in waves and pinned her hair up to give it a faux short length. This look might seem complicated, but it is really very easy to pull off. First curl your entire head with a curling iron wrapping the hair around the barrel of the iron the same way all around your head. Let your hair cool completely and spray it down with a generous amount of hairspray. With a natural bristle brush, gently brush your hair into soft waves.

http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-beauty/news/katy-perrys-retro-hairstyle-love-it-or-hate-it-2012137
US Magazine

Don’t be afraid to brush your hair out, the curls will turn into soft waves and the hairspray will keep the waves from coming out. As long as your hair is completely cool, and you use a gentle stroke, you will be get the look you want. If your hair is long, you can make it look shorter like Katy did by pinning it up. First gather your hair into a loose ponytail. Next roll the ends up and pin them with several bobby pins at the length your want. Reapply some hairspray to keep everything in check, and add a pretty retro hairband.

Tips

  • Use small sections of hair to curl and let them completely cool. This will lock in the curl pattern, if you brush it when the hair is not cool you’ll brush the curl and waves right out.
  • Keep the ponytail loose and roll the ends up tightly. You might have to practice this step a few times to get the look you want.
  • Use long hair pins and pin the ends of your hair close to your scalp..
  • Curl activator will help your hair to curl, and root lift will give you lots of volume.
  • If you’re starting with just shampooed hair, use a large barrel brush with your blow dryer. This will give you a smooth finish to start out with.

Follow these styling tips and you will look red carpet ready and have a soft sexy retro look just like Katy’s.

Bring Out Your Natural Curls – Oklahoma City Hair Salon

Women with naturally curly hair are discovering the freedom and beauty of letting their natural texture shine. Wearing your hair naturally is not only freeing, but it helps to keep you hair healthy looking. When you use high heat tools such as a flat iron, curling iron, and blow dryer you sap the moisture out of your hair and these tools can damage your hair causing frizz and split ends. This can make you end up with a head of fuzzy out of control hair. But if you learn to work with your natural texture and curl patterns, you can have a head of glorious beautiful hair.

http://www.dailymakeover.com/blogs/beauty-trends-and-news/top-10-curly-celebrity-hairstyles.html?slideid=8&slideshowPaused=false
Daily Make Over

Your first step is to find a stylist who knows how to work with curly hair. Curly hair presents its own set of challenges for the stylist. It is very different to cut and style curly hair than wavy or straight hair. Visit your stylist every four to six weeks (depending on how fast your hair grows) to maintain the shape of your style and get split ends trimmed. This will not only keep your look fresh, but help to cut down on frizz.

Moisture is your curly hair’s best friend. Look for cleansing, conditioning, and styling products free of sulfates and alcohol. Ask your stylist to give you recommendations on professional products to keep your hair looking and feeling great. A leave in conditioner is one of the best products to use to keep naturally curly hair manageable and soft. Anti-frizz serum should be a curly headed girl’s best friend. These products coat your hair to help reduce static electricity and give your hair an extra boost of shine.

Always pat your hair dry and avoid rubbing it with a towel after you cleanse and condition it. This will help cut down on tangles and frizz. Use the diffuser attachment on your blow dryer, and use your fingers to fluff your hair as you dry it. Never brush wet hair, it is very fragile when wet. Instead use a wide tooth comb or hair pick to get out any tangles. You can also use some curl booster on towel dried hair to give your curls definition. A bit of paste after your hair is dry will also help to define your curls. Embrace your natural curls and let their beauty shine this season.
