How to Band Natural Hair – Oklahoma City Hair Salon

Natural hairstyles have become very popular, and with them come special care needs. Natural hair is prone to breakage, and high heat tools add to this tendency. One way to help your hair relax before you style it is to band it. Banding stretches the hair gently without heat. It is one way to protect your natural hair from damage, while making it more manageable. All you need to band your hair are good quality covered ponytail holders. Be sure to get ones that are wide enough to band your hair correctly, and have enough padding protect your hair.

http://beadsbraidsbeyond.blogspot.com/2011/04/banding-faq.html
Beads Braids Beyond

After you wash your hair and towel dry it, use a large tooth comb to detangle it, and apply a leave in conditioner. Section out your hair like you are going to do all over braids. Apply moisturizer to the first section of your hair, and place a covered ponytail holder at the base. Add more holders spacing them a half inch to one inch away from each other. Continue down the section of hair until you reach the ends. Braid the ends which are loose. Repeat this process on all sections of your hair, and let dry overnight.

In the morning you can take the bands out and style your hair. Your hair will be stretched and much easier to braid, twist, or set in flexi-rods. Banding is a great choice for children’s hair. It protects their hair from heat while making it much easier to work with. Ask your stylist for suggestions for moisturizing and conditioning products to protect and nourish your natural hair. She can also help you learn how to band your hair, and give you suggestions about styling.

Tips to Create a Fishtail Braid – Oklahoma City Hairstyles

Fishtail braids are a very hot look this summer, and one that will keep you cool during the hot and humid months. Nothing is worse in the humid Oklahoma City summers than hot sticky hair on the back of your neck. With a fishtail braid you can wear it high in a ponytail, or low and have it skimming your shoulder. This is a very elegant look for a special night out. Recently Blake Lively wore a stunning fishtail braid to an event. It looked very polished and stylish with her yellow gown. Here are some tips to create a fishtail braid of your own.

http://www.sheknows.com/beauty-and-style/articles/965815/celeb-hairstyle-of-the-week-blake-lively
She Knows

Brush your hair with a natural bristle brush until it is smooth. If you have very thick hair, section your hair out and start at the ends. Move your way up the hair shaft to remove any tangles. This will make your hair easier to work with. If you want a messy look, add some texture product after you get it brushed out and fluff your hair with your fingers. After you brush out your hair, gather it up into a side or high ponytail and secure it with a covered elastic. (Use a clear one if you don’t want the elastic to show.)

Divide the ponytail into two equal sections. Unlike a traditional braid, you won’t be using three sections of hair. Take a small section from the outside of one of the main sections and pass it over the hair to join it with the other side. Next take a small section out of the outside of this section and join it with the first section. You should be taking small sections from the outside of the two main sections and passing them over and joining them to the other side all the way down your ponytail. Don’t worry about the sections being perfect, a fishtail braid is naturally a bit messy.

Braid the entire ponytail and secure with a covered elastic. Spray hair with some hairspray and you’re done. You can add a pretty clip or hair bow for an extra bit of style or pop of color.

Styling a fishtail braid takes just a bit of practice, and in no time you’ll have one of summer’s hottest looks mastered. Be sure to start out with a great cut and if you need a tutorial, ask your stylist to show you how to create a fishtail braid.

5 Ideas to Stay Cool This Summer – Oklahoma City Hairstyles

Summer in Oklahoma City can be hot and humid and you need a style which keeps you cool and looking great all day. Nothing is more aggravating than to spend a lot of time and effort on your hair only to have it go flat or frizz up once you get in the heat. One option is to get a short style, but if you don’t want to sacrifice your length, updos are a good choice to keep cool this summer. Here are some ideas to stay cool and look great.

Bobs are very popular choices for short and medium length hair. They come in many varieties and offer several styling options. A fun bob is an asymmetrical cut. Longer on one side, this cut helps to soften a square face and give a round face more definition. If you’re not brave enough to have one side of your hair shorter than the other, you can achieve a similar look by pinning up one side of your hair and using a pretty hair clip to add some glamor.

A layered bob is great for fine and thick hair. For thin hair it helps to add volume, and for thick hair a layered bob removes some of the weight and lets your natural wave pattern shine. Ask your stylist for a layered bob with or without bangs or fringe. You can style this cut straight, wavy, or put it up in hot rollers for a curly look.

A graduated bob is a sleek and classic look. The hair is cut on an angle and is a shorter in the back and layered a bit. One of the things that makes this cut unique is the sharp angles around the face. Combine this look with a striking hair color and you’ve got an edgy and sophisticated look.

Braids are still going strong this summer. Braids are a way to keep your length and be very creative. You can wear your hair like the picture, with a braid across the hair line and the back of your hair pulled up into a braided bun. If you have long hair, have your stylist braid your hair into small plaits and then pull them back into a ponytail, or wrapped them up into a stylish bun.

A side French braid gives a simple ponytail a lot of style. This is a great look for work, a night out, or just shopping around town. To get this look, make a deep side part and pull a section of your hair to the front. Braid this section into a French braid and then gather your hair into a ponytail. Pull a small section of hair out of the pony and wrap it around the elastic and secure it with hair pins to hide the elastic.

Summer will be hot, there’s not doubt about that. You can look cool and polished with these styles. Ask your stylist for cool summer hairstyle ideas, and which products to use to keep your hair shiny and fresh.

Stay Cool and Fresh with Braids This Summer – Oklahoma City Hair Salon

If you’re looking for a way to stay cool and fresh this summer, why not try out braids? Braids of all types are very popular, and for the summer they are a great way to keep your hair up and out of the way and still look great. Jill Scott is known for her chic take on natural hair and in this pic she has her hair braided and pulled up into curly ponytail. The neat braids explode into a riot of fabulous curls and give her a youthful and playful vibe.

You don’t have to have ethnic hair to wear this style, just about all hair types can be braided this way. The trick is to add some styling paste or gel and braid your hair while it is damp. This makes it easier to handle and will help the braids lock once your hair dries. Just be sure to use the product sparingly so you don’t get product buildup. If you’re not up to spending hours braiding your hair, make an appointment with your stylist. Just be aware this style does take a while to obtain. But once you’ve got your hair braided, this style is very low maintenance.

To take care of your new braids, gently shampoo your hair by soaking your hair and then gently massaging your braids to cleanse them. Be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly so you get all of the shampoo out. If you don’t your scalp may get irritated and dry. Pat your hair dry being careful not to rub your braids. Apply some scalp cream or Argan oil to keep your scalp healthy and prevent it from getting itchy.

If you wear your hair like Jill in this picture, make sure the hair not braided stays clean and moisturized, too. This will help prevent it from becoming frizzy. Wear a silk headscarf to bed to protect your braids. Remember not to braid your hair too tightly to prevent breakage and scalp irritation. With this style which combines braids and natural hair, you can keep your cool and look great all summer.

Braids and Waves the Best of Both Worlds – Oklahoma City Hair Salon

Braids are hot this season, and so are natural waves. You can have the best of both of these trends with a section of side braids and large voluminous waves. If you have ethnic hair this is a great way to show off your hair’s natural curl and waves with an unexpected shot of style on the side. If you have straight hair you can add waves with hot rollers and then braid one side to create this look.

One of the most important things natural hair needs is moisture. When you need to add moisture to your hair, you don’t want products which will weigh it down and make it feel greasy. One of the best ingredients to look for in hair care products is argan oil. Argan oil is derived from the nut of the Argan tree, a native of Morocco. It contains essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals your hair needs to be strong and shiny. Argan oil absorbs quickly and completely leaving hair soft and manageable.

To get this look apply a leave in conditioner containing argan oil and an anit-frizz serum to towel dried hair. Either let your hair air dry, or use the diffuser on your hair dryer with the heat and power setting on low. This will help prevent your hair from becoming too voluminous and out of control. Once your hair is dry, apply some hair wax, gel, or paste to the section of hair you want to braid and make small braids in any design you like. Spritz your hair with sheen spray and you’re done.

If your hair is straight, or not as curly or wavy as you want, use curl activator and anit-frizz serum on towel dried hair, blow dry your hair, and then use hot rollers to create soft waves or curls. You can also put twists on one side of your head instead of braids for another chic look. Ask your stylist to help you if you’re not proficient at braiding, and ask her recommendations for products containing argan oil. You can styling products containing this wonderful ingredient and also entire lines of hair care products.

Spring is in the air and with spring come weddings. There are several choices brides have for hairstyles, and a classic bun is always a great option. You can wear a bun in many different ways from slick and pulled back to textured and messy. High buns and low buns are in style this season and a bride can tailor her hairstyle to match her head dress. Another popular trend is the use of braids. Braids are very versatile and can be worn in conjunction with many styles. They add interest and femininity.

In this pic Nicole Richie combed a low bun with braids. This style may look complicated, but it is actually very easy. Brush your hair back and divide the front into four section, two on each side of your face. Form braids with these sections and pin them toward the nape of your neck. Next take your hair and pull it into a messy ponytail. Take the ponytail and wrap it around its base pinning it as you go.

If you’re wearing this as a wedding hairstyle, you can place some small flowers throughout your hair, or use pretty crystal pins or clips for a special touch. Other variations include twists instead of braids, a high bun which sits on the crown of your head, or place your bun somewhere in the middle or to the side. If you’re planning a wedding book an appointment a head of time so you and your stylist can find the perfect hairstyle for your special day.

6 Stylish Bridal Hairstyles for 2012 – Oklahoma City

decorationideas.wordpress.com

The wedding day is the most important day in any girl’s life and she needs to have the perfect dress, the best makeup and the ultimate hairdo. Your hairstyle can really change the way you look on your wedding day, so it is important to know what you want.

One good way to be sure that you are getting the right hairdo is by trying out the hairstyle beforehand. Ask your stylist to give you 3 or 4 different hairstyles and then choose the one that looks best and goes well with your dress and accessories.

Here are a few bridal hairstyles you can try and check the look:

1. Soft Curls:

Soft curls look great in any hair length and make your overall appearance look soft and smooth. You can just leave your curls open so that they flow down your shoulder or tie up the front half and use a beautiful accessory to hold it in place.

2. Buns & Updos:

Side buns or updos are another way to go for your bridal hairstyle. If you want a softer look, you can go with a loose side bun with strands of hair coming out from the sides as it looks beautiful. Moreover, buns are great for using jeweled accessories and if you want to show of your long neck and the perfect jewelry, this might be the best way to go.

3. Braids:

All kinds of braids are extremely popular with brides nowadays as they can be done in various styles. You can just braid the front hair and let the rest of your hair flow loose or you can tie it all up in a lose braid. Another way to go is to get smaller braids done and then have them entwined into a bun. One great thing about braids is that you can put small flowers or decorative pins in your braids.

shortlonghairstyles.com

4. Straight Hair with Bangs:

If you like straight hair, one very simple and elegant look for you can be to let your hair down and get your hairstylist to give you stylish bangs before the wedding. You can simply put a tiara on your head and feel like a princess. Make sure that you get your hair straightened or blow dried to get a smooth and glossy look.

5. Hair Extensions:

If your hair is shorter than what you would have liked, you can get extensions for the big day. Ask your hair stylist to get you the perfect extensions that go well with your hair texture. Make sure that you get them colored so that they match your hair color perfectly. The best thing about hair extensions is that you can get them colored, straightened or curled, according to your hair style.

6. Princess Hairbands:

If you do not want to get a very complicated hairdo, you can simply let your hair down and use a princess hairband to make it look more elegant and stylish. However, keep in mind that this will give you a more casual look as opposed to the other hairdos.

How to Do Hillary Duff’s Side Braid

At her recent book signing for her new book, Devoted, Hillary Duff wore her hair in an edgy side braid. What made this look different was the addition of a strip of leather into the braids. You can add a leather strip like Hillary did, or you can add some ribbon or feather extensions. To style a side braid like Hillary’s you first need to add some texture spray to your hair and rough it up with your hands. Next separate your hair into three pieces and pull them off to one side. Attach the leather strand with an elastic onto the middle braid. Create a loose braid and secure the ends with a hair tie. Wrap any extra leather strand around the hair tie and tie it. You can leave the stray strands loose, or secure them with bobby pins. Spray your hair all over with some hair spray and you’ve got a pretty twist on traditional braids.

Style Bistro

An alternative to a side part is a side ponytail. Use some texture product to make your hair easier to work with and to give you some volume then rough up your hair with your hands. Gather your hair into a side ponytail and secure with a hair tie or barrette. You can wear your hair in a deep side part like Hillary did or if you’d rather, part your hair a bit off center. An off center part is slimming to your face and keeps your style from looking too severe. If you want some lift in the crown, gently backcomb your hair and then smooth your hair down with a paddle brush. Have fun experimenting with different variations, and ask your stylist for recommendations on professional products to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy.

How to Style Lauren Conrad’s Loose Side Twist

Lauren Conrad’s pretty side twist is the perfect style if you want to try something different with your hair yet still look sexy and polished. This style is best for wavy hair, but you can use a curling iron to add waves or tame naturally curly hair. The deep side part and off center style helps to flatter round faces, although this style looks good on almost any face shape.

On towel dried hair apply some volumizing mousse and use your fingers to tousle your hair as you blow dry it. Once you have your hair dry, apply some heat protecting product and anti-frizz spray. Use a large or medium barrel curling iron to add lots of waves and curls. This not only frames your face, but makes your hair easier to work with. Give your hair a light spray of hairspray, and part your hair into three sections. Next make a loose braid that goes to one side. Make sure you don’t pull the braid too tightly, you want a messy loose look. You can also twist your hair together for a different look. Leave lots of waves and curls around your face.

Take the ends of the braid or twists and collect them in a covered elastic. Roll the ends under and secure them with bobby pins. Spray your hair with some more hairspray and you’ve got a feminine and pretty hairstyle. You may want to ask your hairstylist to help you the first time you try this style. She can show you how to handle your hair and help you select professional products that are best for your hair texture and type.

4 Fun Fall Hairstyles – Oklahoma City Hair Stylist

Alicia Keys at the 2009 American Music Awards ...
Image via Wikipedia

With Autumn in full swing, there are lots of chances to check out new hairstyles.  You might see something you like at a local celebrity event, or you could watch the coverage of international fashion events or even television specials packed with stars, like the American Music Awards in November.  It’s also a good idea to think about these things as you prepare to visit your hair-stylist. It’s OK to go to the salon with no special idea of what you want. Your hairstylist should be able to make recommendations, but here are a few Fall ideas for your hair as you think about the season ahead.

  1. The classic up-do can work for business or pleasure.  This hairstyle goes well with pants suits or business wear.  For a night out, have it curled into waves and then pinned up.
  2. Braids are another way to dress up your hair. And they don’t give the impression that you haven’t done anything with your hair.   Despite the fact that braiding is not really rocket-science, if done well, it can make your hair stand out and look fantastic.  For formal events, professionally styled and braided hair can be beautiful and elegant.  While a quick scrunchie could say “I’m casual today”, a braid can easily say the opposite.
  3. Do something new with your bangs!  Consult your hair stylist about the right bangs to go with your facial structure, and go for it.  Bangs are in again, and you can choose between heavy ones, or you can sweep them to the side.  It won’t change the lovely picture that is your face, but it will give it a new frame.
  4. Ponytails are also a can-do Fall style! If you want to experiment with this look, let your stylist know.  This will help them to know how to refresh the shape of your hair without taking off length that will flow with this style.  Ponytails can give a slim look to the face, too.  You can also try a style with the part down the center of your hair.  This can be in combination with a ponytail or without.

Whatever you try, have a little fun this Fall with a fresh hairstyle.  People will notice the Autumn you. Grab a magazine and visit your stylist – you’ll be glad you did.

Dreadlock Extensions the Look Without the Wait – Oklahoma City Hairstylist

Dreadlocks are a natural way to wear your hair that is very stylish and easy to care for. They are formed by twisting your hair into locks which mature and mesh together to form dreads. If you like the look of dreads, but don’t want to spend all the time it takes to grow out your hair and lock it, you can get the look with dreadlock extensions. Dread extensions come in natural human hair and synthetic. Usually synthetic dreads are made with wool and are similar in texture to thick yarn. One of the great things about synthetic dreads is they come in a rainbow of colors. You can also have your stylist create dreads for you out of human hair extensions. These give you a natural look that you can maintain just like your natural hair.

http://www.hugemassif.com/features/hair.htm
Hugemassif.com

Dread extensions can be placed in your hair very easily. Dread extensions have a loop on one end that you pass under your hair, then you take the end of the extension and pass it through the loop and draw it up tight. This locks the dread extension onto your natural hair. You can put more than one dread extension onto a lock of your natural hair if you want to, but be sure you don’t do too many. The weight of too many dread extensions can cause breakage or damage to your natural hair. Your stylist can also place dread extensions into your hair by braiding your natural hair and braiding the extension into the hair. Extensions can be dreaded before or after they are placed into your hair (usually they are dreaded before they are placed).

Another option for dread extensions are dread falls. These are hair pieces which are worn temporarily and not placed permanently into your hair. You can make your own dread falls or have your stylist make them for you with your choice of colors and hair. Dread wigs are also another option. This lets you keep your hairstyle, but gives you the look of dreads without the commitment. Most stylist who specialize in dreadlocks can make dread wigs and dread falls. Ask your stylist what your options are for dreads. She will have the latest ideas and techniques to give you the look you want.
