Eradicate Dandruff with Nioxin Scalp Treatment
March 16, 2010 by Anastasia

Nioxin is a well known brand of salon hair product for specific problems areas like thinning hair and dandruff. The Nioxin Scalp Treatment is very different from the Nioxin Scalp Therapy. The therapy is for thinning hair; while the treatment is for dry scalp that leads to dandruff.

- Image via Wikipedia
Dandruff can be a major concern because there is no known cure. There are many dandruff products that claim to cure dandruff, but they are all just maintenance products that will require you to keep using them until they become ineffective.
That’s precisely the problem with most dandruff products like dandruff shampoo – after using them for some time, they stop being effective. This is because those store-bought solutions target the symptoms and not the causes of dandruff.
The actual cause of dandruff is an unhealthy scalp which results in those annoying flakes that never end. The Nioxin team believes that if a scalp is treated and protected properly, then the dandruff all but disappears – sort of like going into remission.
The use of botanical ingredients is what separates Nioxin from the rest of the dandruff treatments you can buy anywhere. Nioxin is a blend of vitamins, minerals, and natural active ingredients that will not harm you or your body. Any product at all can cause some irritation if you have ultra sensitive skin – even lotion or water – but short of that, Nioxin is very gentle.
You can only get Nioxin treatment or purchase the product for home use when you go to a stylist (like Anastasia) that carries it. It is not available as a retail product. The Scalp Recovery system is broken down into 3 parts: the medicating, soothing serum, and the moisturizing. A stylist experienced with Nioxin products can explain the use of these parts.
One of the problems of dandruff is the itchiness, then the flaking. If you can stop scratching your scalp, then you will experience less flaking. This is what one part of Nioxin aims to do. Nioxin medicates the scalp and moisturizes it so that it won’t itch. The moisturizer is good for the hair strands, because it will strengthen and prevent the hair from getting too dry. Unlike some treatments, Nioxin has a wonderful botanical aroma that is refreshing and soothing.
Consult your stylist, or one that carries Nioxin and understands its use, for help with a dandruff or thinning hair solution.

This is primarily a site for two things – 1. information, articles, and ideas on hair styles and hair cuts, hair color and treatments, and hair extensions, straightening, perms, etc. 2. contact information for Anastasia – a hair stylist specializing in these areas – for men, women, and children. There are also hair style gallery web sites that can help you frame your desire for a particular style direction.

If you can target the online galleries that have got the latest “it,” then you can just bookmark them and think about your own hair style (be sure to bookmark this site, too). Here are four hair style galleries that you should have in your browser favorites:
4. Style Hair Magazine www.style-hair-magazine.com – What makes this hair style photo gallery so interesting is the complete line of hair styles you will find, not to mention age and gender groups. They may have a bit too many ads at the top portion of their web page but the content of this web site tries to include as many hot topics on hair as possible. They have trends, how-to, varying lengths, fun hair, men hair, children’s hair, and bridal hair. What makes this website even more interesting is the Visitors Gallery where guests are allowed to post photos of their handy work either as a hair stylist or a photographer.
3. InStyle www.instyle.com – This is really a complete head-to-toe fashion web magazine. The beauty of this website is that it uploads pretty fast, considering the amount of graphics it has. The hairstyles you will find here are trendy, celebrity-conscious, and absolutely gorgeous. The web page itself is incredibly attractive and full of information without being too crowded and confusing. They have arranged all the eye-catching headlines and captions without appearing too busy.
2. Hair Style Zone www.hairstylezone.com – is another incredible website dedicated to providing you as many choices in hair styles as possible. It shows you how you can use their software even before you register with them.
1. 1001 Hair Styles – www.1001-hairstyles.com – This is not just a gallery of photos. This site allows you to upload your photo, so that you can see how a style would look on you. The galleries also offer two perspectives, which gives you a better idea of how you will look from different angles.

It’s Not Your Grampa’s Mullet
March 12, 2010 by Anastasia
Filed under Hair Styles & Cuts
Back in the day, the ’80s, the mullet was a popular hairstyle for men and women. Who can forget MacGyver and his infamous mullet? Then Billy Ray Cyrus rose to popularity sporting one. Since then the mullet has gotten a bad rap. Destined to be the butt of bad jokes and worn with sleeveless flannel shirts, the mullet faded into the back of fashion. But wait, what do you see now on the heads of chic men and women? Yes, it’s the mullet revamped for the new millennium.

- Image by timlam18 via Flickr
The mullet has been reborn with new and exciting options. It has gone from “business in the front and party in the back” to a fashion statement worn long and short. Today’s mullet is more of a blend of the shag of the ’70s and the mullet of the 80’s. Short choppy layers are found atop long layers. This mixture of lengths and textures make the mullet a great canvas for color.
Emo kids have taken the mullet for their own. Many of the Japanese Anime styles can be traced back to their mullet origins. Bright colors are woven through the long length of the back. Chunky highlights are mixed in the choppy short hair on the crown. The possibilities for color and style are endless and today’s younger generation is taking the mullet to extremes. For them it is not a fashion statement, but a lifestyle statement.
No longer relegated to the trailer parks of bad sitcom’s, the mullet is showing up in mainstream styles. It has withstood the test of time and humor to become the basis for some of the most cutting edge styles today. So put away the old MacGyver reruns and get out your fashion magazine. The mullet is here to stay and it will surely go through more variations before it fades in popularity again.

Find a Stylist Who Knows About Tension
March 10, 2010 by Anastasia
Filed under Hair Styles & Cuts
Your stylist should use the correct tension when cutting your hair. Some stylists pull all clients’ hair very taut or hold it very loosely while cutting. But one size doesn’t fit all. Adjusting the tension based on hair texture, for fine, coarse, straight or curly, is important to get a truly even cut. It is also important that you stylist uses the same tension all through your cut. If she doesn’t do this you will end up with an uneven cut that is choppy and looks bad.

- Image by joellybaby via Flickr
A basic haircut starts with your stylist dividing your hair into sections. Normally you will end up with a section above each ear, one on your crown and depending on the length and thickness of your hair you may end up with two or more sections in the back. Properly sectioning your hair allows your stylist to see and access all parts of your hair and ensures an even cut throughout.
Once your hair is sectioned out, your stylist will begin at the hairline on the nape of your neck. She may have you look down to be sure that you hair falls evenly over your collar. This cut is called the baseline cut. It determines the length of your hair and the basic shape of your cut. Once the baseline cut is done, she will start to take small sections of hair from the back working her way up your head until she reaches the crown.
If you are receiving a layer cut, your stylist will pull the sections of your hair out and hold them in a vertical position. The tension she uses will depend on your hair’s natural texture and wave pattern. Straight hair requires a greater tension than curly or wavy hair. Some stylists work their way from one side of your head to the other, while others start in the middle and work their way out. Either method requires your stylist to pick up a small bit of the section of the hair she just cut and keep the tension even to be sure that all sections end up the same length.
Once she is done with the back of your head, she will move on to either side of your head. Once again if she is giving your a layer cut, she will repeat the same method she used on the back of your head being sure to keep the tension even. Depending on the style you have chosen, she will shape your hair and blend it into the back. Now she will move to the crown and front hairline. This is where the tension of the cut is the most important. If the tension becomes too loose or too tight it will not blend properly.
Using the correct tension while cutting hair is important as you can see. Your stylist should have the skill and experience to do this correctly. Always go to a stylist who can cut a variety of hair types and textures. This will ensure that you will get the cut you want and leave feeling satisfied and happy with the way you look.

One Set of Shears Does Not Fit All
March 8, 2010 by Anastasia
Filed under Hair Styles & Cuts
Your stylist should take care to select the correct shears or clippers (and also know which one to use) for your hair texture. One size does not fit all, and if your hair is coming out wrong, this could be why. Ideally, your stylist should have several sets of tools, and adjust based on the client’s hair textures. For example fine straight hair should never be cut with a razor while thick wavy hair will release its curl and body if cut correctly with a razor. An experienced stylist knows that using the correct tool to cut and shape your hair will bring out the natural movement and use this knowledge to create a hair cut that is a work of art.

- Image by davesag via Flickr
In cosmetology school your stylist learned how to use her shears and clippers. While some stylists have a natural talent, it does take practice and experience to learn to use the tools effectively. A talented stylist’s shears are an extension of her hand. She uses them to bring out your hair’s natural beauty by working with your hair’s growth patterns, thickness and texture. This is where knowing which tool to use is so important.
Using the incorrect pair of shears can leave you with an uneven cut and when your hair starts to grow out, these mistakes will become even more apparent. One of the hardest skills to learn is blending a clipper cut on men. Most men’s cuts start with the clippers and graduate to shears on the crown. This transition area around your head is very tricky to get even and blend. Unless your stylist is proficient with her clippers and has a steady hand, the result will be very undesirable. Selecting the correct set of guides for her clippers, your stylist can give you an even cut that will grow out and look good even weeks after she cuts it.
Look for a stylist who is experienced with cutting a wide variety of hair types. A talented stylist has a large arsenal of shears and clippers to choose from to meet all her client’s needs. You can’t cut everyone’s hair with one pair of shears and just like in clothing one size does not fit all, your stylist should be prepared to choose the right “fit” to ensure you get a balanced and even hairstyle that looks good when you leave the salon and for several weeks afterward.

Jessica Simpson Style
March 6, 2010 by Anastasia

You either love her or you don’t know her. She’s the all-American blonde princess who grew up in Texas, and brought that rich and sassy Texas attitude to Hollywood. You’ve got to give it to this bombshell beauty, she’s got a lot of staying power. She started to get noticed in 1999, and today, 11 years after, she’s got star power.

- Image by Getty Images via Daylife
Her beautiful long hair has become a signature look for her, and somehow even with her experiments with other hair styles and hair lengths, nothing looks as great. It’s a young and vibrant hair style with lots of waves and texture. You can probably have this look, too. It’s very simple and won’t even require you to purchase major hair products just to get it right.
First of all, you need to have long hair (or get extensions), at least below the shoulders. Anything shorter than this won’t look as good. You need a superb hair cut. For this style, you need to get your long hair layered.
The stylist will create the look for you, but if you’re not prepared, it’s only going to last until your next shampoo. Don’t delay the shampoo because you can’t bear to lose the “look.” This would make your hair look oily. Instead follow these simple instructions:
After you shampoo your hair, air dry or blow dry until just damp, but not yet dry. Then, put some mousse, being careful not to overdo it. If you put too much of anything on your hair, it will make your hair look heavier, and it may even get itchy. At any rate, after the mousse application, allow you hair to dry.
It is best to keep your dry hair a few hours before going to the next step. This means you can shampoo the night before, then go to sleep. When you wake, you can begin to work magic on your hair.
Start by putting on a little shine serum (your stylist will have the right product or can fast order it for you, if you pay in advance), but only at the ends. This will help your hair against fly-aways. Then, with a hot curler or curling iron and using the biggest size, twirl your hair up to 2 inches from the roots. Jessica Simpson’s curls do not start from the top.
Once the curling iron has cooled a bit, gently pull it away from the hair but maintaining the curls. In other words, don’t drag down the curls or yank out the curling iron. Do this throughout.
When you’re done, spray your hair a bit then flip it over, and run your fingers through the curls gently. Your goal here is to shake the curls a bit so it gets that “Just woke up now” look that Jessica Simpson is famous for.
Bring your hair into position and tame the curls with a wide toothed comb or brush. Jessica likes to part her hair on one side, so why don’t you try it and, if you have her light baby bangs, just drape them sexily over one eye.
Finally, apply some hair spray to keep the curls in place. Hello, Jessica!
As always, consult your stylist to find the right recommendations for your hair texture, face shape, etc.

Jessica Alba Style
March 3, 2010 by Anastasia
Filed under Hair Styles & Cuts
Maybe it’s her Mexican, Dutch, and French background, but Jessica Alba seems to fit in anywhere she goes. Of course, when she first started out as a 12 year old in bit parts, her hair and make-up had a tendency to be over the top. However, none of the flushed cheeks and over-blown hair is obvious today. Clearly, Jessica Alba has come a long way since then.
If you talk to Jessica Alba, she would tell you that she never imagined that people would be describing her as exotic, but that’s exactly what she is, a beautiful, exotic woman. Her girl-next-door image is not the layered, country-style, come-what-may look. Rather, it’s a casualness about her hair, clothes and make-up that brings out that amazing approachable and super-likeable personality.
If one were to describe the style of Jessica Alba, it would be never contrived, welcoming, and capped off always with her trademark smile.
When it comes to hair, Jessica Alba has gone through the book, and experimented with many hair styles and hair colors in the past, but never has she looked more beautiful than today. Her affinity with highlights probably started early in her career because it has become practically her hair style trademark.
To get that Jessica Alba look, it isn’t just about the soft, long, brown curls and highlights, but also making sure that hair accessories never go over the top. It seems her preference though is for long hair – straight or wavy. Her highlight are always on the blonde side and compliment her skin tone and hair color tremendously well.
To get her hair style, you need to have the ends layered for that bouncy effect. Achieve the soft look by also layering the sides of the face to gently frame your best facial features. Unless you have naturally thick, wavy hair, you will need to use volumizing hair products to give the illusion of natural waves.
After applying the volumizing hair product (spray or mousse) on your damp hair, flip your head down, and blow dry. Then gently massage the roots to get that bouncy California girl-next-door appeal. If you want more waves, simply use your fingers to scrunch your hair as you blow dry. You can also use medium sized curling aids, but never curl up to the roots, just the middle to bottom end.
Finally, use a diffuser and hair wax to remove the frizziness. Keep in mind that less is better, so don’t go overboard with the styling products because it can weigh down your hair and make it look oily or heavy. Of course it starts with a great cut, with your goals in mind, so as always consult your stylist.

Children’s Haircuts Need Variety and Style
February 25, 2010 by Anastasia

Boys and girls hair styles can be as fun and as varied as their parent’s. Whether your child wants a long or short style, he or she has a wide range of styles to choose from. There are many factors that will help you to determine which type of style will work for your child.
The first thing to consider is your child’s age. If very young, you may want to consider a simple cut. You will be the one who has to take care of your young child’s hair, and you don’t want a cut that will require a lot of maintenance. Young children look best in simple, carefree styles.
Take lifestyle into consideration. Is your child active and plays sports? If so, consider a shorter style that is easy to care for like a short comb forward style for boys. Active girls may prefer a short bob or layered cut that is wash and go with a minimal amount of styling time, while some may want to have long hair that they can pull back into a ponytail to give them more options.
As your child nears teenage years they will want more sophisticated styles. There are several options available that are easy to care for yet give your pre-teen a hip sense of style. Just look at any Disney or Nickelodeon show and you will see that boys and girls alike have short and long styles that have a lot of fun and movement. Encourage your pre-teen to stay with styles that don’t require a lot of fuss and product since they will still have get to school on time, and they need enough sleep.
No matter what style your child desires, a good stylist can help you and your child make the right choice for their age and lifestyle. Mimicking popular styles should be moderated by tailoring them to your child’s hair type and thickness. Consult a stylist who enjoys working with children.
