How to Style the Perfect Ponytail

The ponytail has been popular with women of all ages for many years. A ponytail is simple yet looks polished and chic. It is a style that will take you from work, out on the town or to the corner market. Ponytails look good with a formal gown, a business suit or a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt. It would seem that a ponytail would be an easy style to do, but it can be a challenge. Here are some tips to get the perfect ponytail every time.

1. 

   Decide the texture you want. Do you want sleek and smooth or messy? If you want your hair to be smooth, use a styling serum and a brush to blow dry it completely. Direct the hair to the back of your head so that it will be easier to pull back and put into the style. If you want a messy look you can use some mousse and use your fingertips to dry your hair with a blow dryer.

2. Use a flat iron for a sleek look or add some curls to the ends of your hair with a curling iron.
3. Use a large flat brush and brush your hair back and pull it up into a ponytail. Secure it with a soft elastic so that your hair doesn’t break and corral any stray hairs with a few bobby pins. If you want a messy look, don’t capture the stray hairs but let them fall naturally. You can also leave your ponytail a bit looser to bring out the natural texture of your hair. Use hair spray or freeze spray depending on the amount of hold you want.
4. Place your ponytail at the crown of your head for the most current look. Another option is to wear your ponytail at the base of your neck. This is a nice change from the traditional ponytail look.
